using my d40 for the wife and purchasing another body suggestions

can i get a little input for purchasing another camera body I have the d40 now with the 18-55 and the 70-300vr thinking about another body im thinking about a d50, d200 or a d80 cant really decide the d300 is kinda out of my price range right now im also thinkiong about purchasing the 105vr f2 so should i go ahead and get the lens and use the d40. ty mike

If you like higher ISO performance, don't go for the D200. Go for D80 which has better higher ISO performance. D50 is slightly better (imo) than D80 but lacks a few features which you may like (wireless flash, along with better histogram display, larger LCD screen, etc).
 
what do you think about saving up a few more funds and going for the d300 and growing into it

Depends on if you're ok with the weight/size difference, and there is a learning curve when going to the D300 (as with any camera that is above the D40), though how much I can't say since I dont' know your level of photography knowledge.

It is quite an expense difference. I'm not sure if a successor to the D80 is coming soon (it would appear about the right timing) so you may want to wait a bit to see if something is coming that might have many of the D300 features at a lower price.
