5D Mark II - Field Guide announced

I know for a fact (and can't say how or why) that Wiley Publishing
has been planning a 5D Mark II book since the summer of 2007, but
that doesn't at all mean that a 5D Mark II will be released on or
before November 2008.
Sure, but it does not mean that a 5DMKII will not be released sometime before Nov. 2008 either.
Here is what it does prove:

1.) They have chosen an author for the book and there is progress on
the book, a timeline for them that ususally takes 5 to 6 months
(August 2008 announcement?).

2.) Also, Wiley Publishing is in close, perpetual contact with the
powers that be at Canon (and Nikon, et. al.) and Canon shares a great
deal of information with publishers like Wiley so they can publish
their books. And prior to January 2008 the term "5D Mark II" was
something no one was supposed to use. The fact that they are
registering a book with an ISBN # says that the successor to the 5D
will in fact be called the 5D Mark II (and not 3D, 4D, 5D XSi etc.).

Wiley does have a strict NDA in place.
Not likely. Charlotte may have a NDA with Canon, not Wiley.
They also wouldn't want to
jeapordize that NDA with Canon because it could have a ripple effect
through many of its upcoming Canon-related projects. As such, the
release of this information, especially when most (if not all) of the
Wiley, Amazon, and Canon managers are out of their offices during a
long American holiday weekend (giving the story a chance to snowball)
will probably mean the camera is going to be announced very soon OR
heads are going to roll at Wiley.

Not at all. Even if the leak can be traced to the top level of management, there will always be a fall guy lower down to take the blame for the leak if necessary.

Is it going to be better than the Canon AE-1 Program?
I know that was meant to be facetious, but that's a matter of perspective. Some of my favorite photos were taken with my first camera, the [non-program] Canon AE-1.

(I wish I'd been a better photographer when I was dating those two.)

Yup, they were supposed to keep it a secret.

And now you are in the dog house with Canon. Yes, this might be corrected very soon, so "hopefully" everyone forgets about it.

We may in the future, look back at this as the first unofficial announcement of the 5D Mark II.

If I am wrong, then state clearly that you have not written such a book, and are not covering it up by saying it is an error.
The Amazon.com listing is an error that I hope will be corrected very
soon.

the exact nature of this so-called error? Are you saying that the title is wrong or that you have no such book in progress? Are you saying that amazon shouldn't have listed the book yet? Are you saying that you have no knowledge or inflormation from Canon regarding a model called a 5D MkII?

What exactly is the error you refer to?

Thanks

Rob

Hanging around here too long

You had TIME for photography?
Photography was part of the fun. Besides, can you think of a more interesting way to learn how to improve your photographic technique than to have attractive women running around your house?

A girlfriend who agrees to be a model is a gem.

I think that everyone can assume that Canon
will--eventually--introduce one or more new cameras. The truth is
that I don’t know what the camera (or cameras) will be.
We cannot assume that Canon will release a 5D MKII, although in all likelihood it will.
To respond to a few of the comments in this discussion, I can tell
you that: (1) I have no inside information;
that is what you are supposed to say if you have promised not to tell.
(2) I’m not under NDA;
That is possible. There may not be a formal NDA but Canon can keep track of leaks. Those who leaked info. can be denied info in the future.
(3) I do not have a pre-release camera of any flavor, and
May be you have the production model already? :)
(4) there is no “leak.”
Of course. It wasn't meant to be a leak. It was indeed an error by some people who probably did not understand the ramifications of the advance announcement of the book. It was most likely an innocent error by some sales people at Wiley.
The listing on Amazon.com is simply an error--no subplot, no leaks,
and no secrets being kept. Like you, I wait anxiously to see what
Canon will announce next.
Absolutely. There is no way Canon or Amazon would be part of some sort of collaboration on a leak. Canon likes to keep future releases top secrets. So this error is probably not to Canon's liking.
Also in regard to the Amazon.com listing, I can tell you that I do
not know how the error was made, and that I had nothing to do with
it. In fact, I didn’t know about the listing until late last night
when photographers began e-mailing me.
Absolutely. There is no way you can be involved in leaking the info. If you were involved, then you would probably not be given any advance info or models to test by Canon in the future. Leaking the info would not be to your benefit.
I sincerely wish the error hadn’t been made, and I can’t speculate on
how it happened. I’ve alerted the people I know about the listing
errors, and they are working to correct them. I hope that the listing
errors are removed real soon now; but given the U.S. holiday weekend,
it may be later rather than sooner.

Kind regards,

Of course, now that the error has surfaced, it may bring unpleasant repercussions. If I were in your shoes, I would be hopping mad that the book was announced prematurely. It creates problems between you and Canon, and it requires you to take time to explain yourself. If the error had never happened, you would have been better off. Regards.

How much of an advance did Wiley give you on this advance publicity of your advance publication describing the advanced copy of the 5D-II?
;-)

After all, the damage to your credibility that their mistake has caused must be worth something!

Isn't that what Barry said here:

That fall guy, sorry "new employee", could be unemployed by 9am tomorrow.,
Problem solved.

... there's a 5D mark II on the way, probably to be announced at or before Photokina. In other words, something we already knew and a subject that has been beaten to death on these boards :)

Publishers often set non-fiction publication dates long before the book is even written. The author will likely not get a "beta" version of the camera but will get a review body from Canon once it's announced and will turn around the revised edition of the book in a few months. In addition, the publication date might well slip.

Actually, "that" tells us nothing, whatever "that" is.

Yes we knew, but there are some who refused (and still may continue to refuse) to believe there will be a 5D MKII this year. The existence of the book makes it a lot more believable.
