Hi, as I am unable to see how to embed my pictures to this message and added a link that required a login in my last post, here is a link to some sample pictures taken with my Nikon P80 coolpix.

I have not added any comments about the camera as I have only had it a day or two, but I can see it is very able to make point and shoot easy, it focuses quickly and accurately and will take 13 frames per second for 30 shots.

The shape of things to come.

It needs to be used at 64 or 100 ISO to get good results.

But will take pictures I was not able to take with my Coolpix P5000.

Here is the link.

I will add more as I take them if there is a interest.

Thanks and best regards,

Rob.

You are a long time dead

Thanks for the photos. Have you noticed any significant purple fringing in any of your shots? The photos look pretty good but since they are not full size I cannot tell too much about their quality. Please continue to add to the photos since your photos do give us and idea about the performance of the camera.

Thank you! Can you please give us an IQ comparison to the P5000 at ISO 100...as you get more comfortable with the P80?
PF is the rule in these long range zooms.

To imbed a photo, you just need to use a URL that ends in the .jpg extension. I followed your link and opened the page with this photo of yours:

Then I right-clicked the photo and opened it in a new window, which gave me a URL in the address bar with the .jpg extension, which I copied and pasted into the message window here.

On the door sceen the P5000 seems to have significant green fringing especially along the side of the door entrance? ? ? The P80 doesn't have any fringing.

and then comparing (and or saturation etc.) to the P5000 images?
At ISO 100 is the difference in IQ notable?
Thank you!

Well I am new here and this is my first post. I bought this camera today without having been keeping an eye on the market. It just looked like what I want.

I bought the Nikon D40 last year and had it for a couple weeks then sold it to help pay for a trip to Europe. Then I bought a Nikon S10 to take with me on that trip. I really liked the D40 and I really like the S10 but the P80 seems to be in the middle where I want to be. The D40 was too cumbersome for me to just whip out and take a shot. The S10 lacks a viewfinder which has taught me how to wield an LCD screen : . it also has little user input permitted.

Anyway, I'm not all technical with this stuff anymore. Just wanted a decent Nikon. Only real negative I knew before purchase was no RAW but I can live with that. Reality is this is a jpg world and I can manipulate anything. It is all about control and this camera gives me a lot of that.

I am attaching three max images here for attack if anyone is so inclined. I have a gallery of posts from today, my first day of using the camera after buying it this afternoon. Couple comments:

The battery worked just fine out of the box.

The salesman fumbled with the controls but after shooting my first couple of shots I found the controls to be intuitive and fantastic in their placement for what I want to do with a camera. It is great in that respect, no deep menu hunting and only a rare click to nowhereville which will be easily overcome with more use. Excellent interfacing with the user and this machine.

All of the shots I show were taken in an Auto mode. One of my favorite menu offerings is a click that lets me choose between Auto-Macro-Infinity-Manual. It's great, no digging or plethora of options.

All images are unenhanced. There were a lot of shots that seemed to wash out, especially skies that had clouds and were not washed out themselves, and none used a flash. I have half of the 70 shots I took today posted here:

And here are the three at full size for any comments or criticisms:

I will try to post shots at my gallery from the D40 while I had it and the S10 which I want to keep. I'll also try to post exact settings there for pix sometime.

Thanks!

Steve

Thanks for posting....i downloaded the full pics to see what i can do with em but i just cant get to like what this camera produces as the lens has very poor resolution and the camera does not seem to handle exposure too well. If it does what you need i am glad you are happy with it so have fun.

Okay, here are three indoor shots with the flash on. I auto-enhanced the middle one to boost the colors. Also, these three were transferred into the Nikon software then opened from there in Fireworks and exported as progressive JPGs @ 100%. I'm looking forward to trying out the different white balance settings like I should have for my first camera shots outdoors yesterday. Will shoot more today.

I apologize for the pet hair everywhere but trust you can look beyond that :/ after all it is the cat's personal mat and I need a summer carpet cleaning. Gross. Also I would imagine Noise Reduction off would help, don't know. Hope that helps.

I was surprised to see so little purple fringing in the high contrast areas at the top where the trees are right against the bright sky. PF seems to be a problem on some of the other cameras with long lenses.

I have a couple shots I took today which tell me I didn't know what I was doing yesterday, but no surprise. Turned on the Whit Balance for Daylight and shot these. Only saved them at 1024x768 the default highest setting from the Nikon software for JPGs.

This should do for now. Will post in the future when I have something spectacular happen :)> . Lots to learn about this camera and I'm happy with it. It's a keeper. But so is my S10 if for the great fun factor and interesting shots.

Steve

Sometimes we need to be patient till users learn about various settings before jumping to conclusions about Image Quality evaluations!
We are too quick to judge and too quick to come to conclusions!

I hear talk of purple fringing and looking for it and stuff but I am not sure my eye is trained for it like most good photographers. I did notice some graininess in the shadowy parts of the building ceilings in some shots but then today i saw that they are actually reflecting the clay colored brick beneath them and was surprised -- and maybe pleased? -- at that vs. the1:4 jpg compression or othere poor quality issues, which may still be a factor some, not sure. Let me know if you see any purple fringing or other nasty stuff in the future will you? I saw you have pix of people stepping out of the picture, nice, and that cat is a trip. Exactly how many kids do you have...?!? The shot of my cat trying to come out the door is worth the price of this camera though i imagine any cam could have caught that as similar if not better. Dunno. They're fun subjects :)> . I have to admit the dog photographs solid black 90% of the time so I am happy to see some distinction and detail in her colorings, that is encouraging.

Thanks for the compliment on photo improvement with the P80. I have to admit I expect with all the latest technology that the camera is going to be 'smarter' than me and on Auto really show off its stuff. Guess that's the lazy consumer in me : . Hoping I can go away this weekend and just go crazy with some manual controls :)> . Peace.

Steve

I have to find the online manual, but fully auto almost never means that you cannot control the ISO independently.

ISO settings and choices...auto or not are almost always a separate menu option from auto program, so the problem you speak of does not exist.
It needs to be used at 64 or 100 ISO to get good results.
What happens if you leave it on auto and the camera pics a higher
ISO? It's not available in Canada yet so I can't look at it.
Looking forward to seeing some reviews.

Lawrie

Thanks for the reply. I'll rephrase that. What happens to the pics if you have to shoot at a much higher ISO. It's available so I assume there are times that you need it.
