I've been excitedly awaiting this. I like the look of the Nexto devices better than Hyperdrives, but all the previous Nextos only took IDE drives. I don't want to mess around with old technology. I have a couple spare SATA notebook drives, plus you can get pink WD Passports dirt cheap and pry the drives out of them. I can't wait until the actual release date (ETA early May).

It still shows as preorder at the US distributor. I guess because Singapore is closer to Korea. Only one ocean left!

If they are indeed really available at eastgear... they must have just been made available. I have been part of beta testing and we were informed that they were indeed planning on ending that phase of beta testing... I'll stop short of saying that I doubt that eastgear really has them but I am a tiny bit skeptical... But then I do suspect they will be available soon.

I just spoke to Eastgear. The stock came in on Friday, Mar 2. Can't go to their store until Monday. The selling price is $199 SGD case only. The price doesn't include the external Li-ion battery.

Never buy version 1.0 of anything.

This is one I really would've wanted. But my Nexto M-1 just arrived. And I had some IDE drives laying around. Ah well, at least I've got an upgrade path now ;-)

I received the device today and it seems to work fine. The hard drive from my old WD Passport slid in easily. I had to reposition two of the sticky foam pads on the drive so they wouldn't overlap with foam pads on the Nexto enclosure. The whole installation, from opening the box to formatting the drive, took about five minutes (most of this was trying to find the tiny screw I dropped).

The enclosure is sturdy and feels quite solid. The postage stamp sized screen is a bit hard to read, but the one button method of navigating through menus and functions is surprisingly intuitive. The learning curve on the device is nearly flat.

The only CF card I have with me today is a 4gig Sandisk Ultra II that only had a small amount of data on it -- 42 RAW images (and their JPG versions). These transferred in about 40 seconds. Extrapolating that to a full card ( 240) means that, theoretically, it should take a little under 4 minutes to copy the whole 4 gig card, which is right about the advertised speed.

Sorry, I messed up the math in that. I got confused by using the number of files and the size differences between RAW and RAW+JPG. To simplify, it transferred 381.27 MB in around 40 seconds, which is substantially slower than the advertised speed of 25MB/s. I'll fill the card and try it again. Maybe it takes a few seconds to get up to speed, and over the course of a long transfer hits the 25MB/s mark.

You would be lucky to get much more than 10MB/s out of a Sandisk Ultra II in any device, I think.

Should a miracle happen and the Nexto eXtreme be able to read with this speed when you are using a slow card...?!

By the way: there should have been enough spare screws included and there are no foam pads at new hard disks.

Werner,

I don't leave screws lying on the floor even if I don't need them. I was not using a new hard drive, I was using one I pulled out of a portable drive I no longer needed, so the original foam pads would have been placed to accomodate the original enclosure. You are right that the card I used was maxed out at the speed I recorded. May I ask why you phrased your response the way you did?

Thank you. I apologize for not checking the card's speed first. My camera is the first device I've had that uses CF and I'm not intimately familiar with the various product lines yet.

Okay I'm home now and I tried it with the Extreme III.

It completely transfered 2.78 GB in 3 minutes 35 seconds.

I'm very interested in this device, but 2.78GB in 3 min 35s seems slower than what they advertised. Was this with the verify function on or off? Thanks.

Why is that? (Honest question - not a troll.)

The Hyperdrives have nice-looking screens to preview images, at least the Colorspace models do.

Did you do a detailed spec-by-spec comparison?

Doesn't this unit have an internal battery?

No, I don't know enough about the technology to do that. For me it was entirely aesthetic. I'm actually a bit revulsed by the colored candy animated designs that seem to dominate a lot of products (iPods, Beryl, Aero, shiny SUVs, Flash animation, cell phones, etc). I find beauty in the simplicity of unadorned, squared, industrial shapes and colors. I looked at the pictures of the Nexto vs. Hyperdrive, and the Nexto appealed to my sensibilities more. Since, as far as I could tell, they're generally comparable technically, that was enough to sway me.
