Loading CHDK on S5

Hello,

I followed the instructions on the wiki and pdf about saving the files onto the SD card, however, I didn't get the option of "Updating Firmware" when I pressed "Menu", which I would assume that I did not probably load chdk? However, I could still get the blue splash screen when I turn on the camera in play mode and I could access the chdk menu... can someone suggest what I should do to resolve this?

My camera's firmware version is 1.01B, so I downloaded the chdk from the wiki ( http://stack.dataghost.com/chdk/allbest-s5is-101b-51.zip ).

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!

There's no "Updating firmware" option in the S5 once you've loaded the CHDK. If could access the CHDK Menu, then that's it, have fun.

Oh that's awesome. So then does that mean I can't make CHDK "stay" in the camera if I swap with a different memory card? I use multiple SD cards, does that mean I have to save the CHDK files on all of them?

First, there are two methods of loading CHDK with older cameras (also known as "WindRiver" based cameras)... That uses the "on" in "Play" Mode, scroll menu down to "Update Firmware", .

The second method works both will "older" cameras and the newer cameras (known as "Dry OS" cameras). The S5 is a newer camera with "Dry OS" and only loads with the "Bootable" SD/SDHC card and DISKBOOT.BIN file.

So, it sounds like you got CHDK running--you must have found and followed the instructions for loading/booting CHDK.

And, CHDK does not "update" the camera's firmware. CHDK is an application (just like a word processor program on a PC). So, each time the camera is turned on, either the internal firmware loads and runs, or the camera sees the DISKBOOT.BIN file and loads CHDK.

If you want to use more memory cards; each one will need to be made "Bootable", copy DISKBOOT.BIN, and the card "Write Protected". If any of these three things are not done, CHDK will not load.

And, that means it is pretty easy to not load CHDK (for some reason) by just turning off the "Write Protect" switch and putting the card back in the camera (the write protect switch is not an electrical switch--it is just read by the camera's firmware or the card reader software to indicate to the software if the card is "protected" or not).

Thanks for your help Bill. A couple more questions, I'm still figuring out a way to download the RAW photos I took on the camera (right now I'm just dragging and dropping onto my computer because when I use CameraWindow it will only download the JPGs). Once I'm done copying the RAW photos onto my computer, can I simply format the card (through the camera) or I have to manually delete them on my computer?

You can delete all of the pics using the in-camera menu. In Playback mode go to the camera menu, select Erase=> erase all.

This will not delete your RAW files though, in order to do so you need to go to the CHDK Menu and use either the File Browser to locate the RAW files and by pressing the "func" key delete em; or which is easier, delete the RAW file when you plug the camera to your computer.

Andrew,

Pretty much you will have to drag and drop (or make a batch file) to move those files to your hard disk--Are you using the S5 or a card reader? (many folks find the Card Readers to be easier to do SD/SDHC operations like format, bootable, copy .cr? files, etc.).

Some people recommend reformating the cards rather than just erasing the images to ensure fast image saves and reliable operation.... However, if you reformat, you will have to copy the DISKBOOT.BIN file and all the CHDK subdirectories (CHDK.CFG setup file, your basic files, make the card bootable again, etc.).

So, you may just have to use your file browser to erase the .img and .cr? files (although, CHDK may offer image and RAW erase too now on the OSD menu).

There is a new program called Card Tricks that may make the process easier... I have not tried it yet--but it seems interesting:
