Hi,

In the manual modes when I have the flash activated, there is an indication in the optical viewfinder (center, bottom) that moves. What does this indicate? Cant find anything in the manual about it. First I thought it was the loading of the flash but it is possible to take pictures with flash before the indicator has stopped moving.

I tend to ignore this on my 350D now, but I think it's the same thing - it's the red eye indicator, the idea being that the light has shone for long enough to make the pupils of the subjects close somewhat.

It's an indicator for the red-eye reduction. The animation of the series of bars is just a timer to give the feature time to work. The red-eye reduction is a bright lamp between the grip and lens mount that shines at your subject to get their pupils to close before the shot.
The indicator below the -2 to +2 scale.
