The weather has been nice in recent days here in the Western Isles, Scotland. I went out to experiment with my new, but pre-owned GX100.

Tracks: B&W mode, 1/176s, f/8.1, ISO 80

Natural Elements: 1/104s, f/8.1, ISO 80, barrel distortion corrected in CS3.

Boulderglow: 1/660s, f/3.6, ISO 80

Makes me feel a little giddy: 1/68s, f/8.1, ISO 80

Soon: 1/410s, f/4.5, ISO 100

All taken with -0.3 or -0.7EV. I won't be setting the aperture as high as f/8.1 again due to the evident lens diffraction. I also shot some short videos but found the compression produces artifacts, the WB would occasionally get confused and the exposure changes were too stepped, not smooth. Actually, the Ricoh seems to record at 600-800 Kbps less than the Canon 570IS which has 30FPS video also.

I also shot this macro which I've been meaning to try for ages, and finally the Ricoh's close macro abilities enabled it:

24H and beyond: 1/28s, f/4.5, ISO 100, macro mode

Thanks for these photos - beauitfully crisp. Did you pp? have you used the G9? How would you rate the gx100 v G9?

Lovely photos. I'm trying to work a few photos in B&W with mixed results. Best results are post production rather than the camera B&W mode though. Did you take RAW? as far as I am aware the G9 doesn't have this capability? right or wrong? For me, I like the RAW of the GX100 and lots of post production work afterwards.

Thanks for viewing them. Yes, I always PP my photos, usually some shadow & highlights adjusting, small corrections in colour and satuation and then some sharpening. I also add a title, description and copyright info to the photo.

I'm sorry, I've never used the G9.

very nice series !!!
Thanks for your comment. I'm now looking forward to using the camera for making some nice time lapses this summer.

Hi Tally. I've struggled to get nice B&W results using my Canon Pro1 B&W mode, but thought the Ricoh was producing quite nice tones, in no small part due to the evening light at the time I took these shots maybe. I didn't need to post process the B&W much, apart from some more sharpening and a little extra contrast without burning out the highlights.

I did take some RAW shots but when I opened them in Adobe RAW I struggled to get the colours to match the JPEGs or how I remembered the scene. With my Canon I have a custom colour profile in ACR and I expect the Ricoh RAW files need one also. To be honest, I already spend too much time processing RAW files from my Canon, and with the long save times of the GX100, I'll probably just shoot JPEGs with it.

Do you have any online photos made from Ricoh RAW files?

I believe the G9 can shoot RAW. The G7 couldn't.

Hi, yes you're correct. Its the G7 and not the G9 that doesn't have the RAW.

I think we are all guilty of taking too many photos of practically the same scene in order to get the 'right' one! That just means spending all night post processing them! I try to spend more time composing and setting up the shot now in order to cut down on post processing bulk. Or instead of snapping everything in sight I go out with the intention of photography one particular aspect or scene.

As for RAW. As I have managed to cut down on the number of photos I take I use it all the time. With the GX100 if there is a prob with the RAW there is always the jpeg to play with. But I do prefer working on the RAW image.

At the moment I'm trying to get to grips with layering as I'm sure my photos would improve if I could but its a no brainer for me, can't handle written instructions to save my life!

I havn't uploaded to the web yet but intend to do soon.
