myLBA, Sigma DG 24-60mm 1:2.8 EX, many pics

I just got it, but it's a lot heavier than I expected (19.5 oz)... I
think if I can find something at 15oz or so, I'll be OK.
Come on. This is already the lightest of all fixed F2.8 zoom . Maybe you should try to never-fail Pentax approach : prime lens.

Definitely my FA28mm plus my F50mmF1.7 excels over that of the Sigma 24-60mm in quality. You just have to zoom with your feet.

You mean the Sigma 18-50mm is the lightest, right? That is why I might switch away from the 24-60mm.

My wife has to use this thing on occasion and if the 24-60 at 19.5oz feels a bit heavy in my hands, she will just end up not using it =)

After this second round of photos, I am looking forward to getting this lens, it should get here this week. That cameta deal was just too good to pass up. now to replace my 16-45 with the 12-24mm, and wait for the 60-250 and i'll be set! (yeah right!!!!)

Hi!

Hope you get a good one. Seeing this forum

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=392699

(check those pics on its about 40 pages to get more fuel :-)

at least Canon versions seem to be good, one after another. Someone has had their version adjusted by Sigma and after that have been very satisfied with the lens.

I made some comparisons between the new kit lens and this, and found absolutely no reason why this wouldn't replace the kit lens in it's focal range. And the new kit lens is very sharp. The Sigma EX 24-60 seems less contrasty than the kit lens (or DA40 forexample) but when needed pics can be post processed up to the level of those lenses. I cannot take contrast away as easily, and so this lens yells to be used on portraits or weddings. I have tried it with one 12mm extender between the lens and body (more would make focusing distance too short) and got close-ups with very nice bokeh (I like more colours, bokeh and abstracts than pin sharp macros).

Here is one:

I really like that photo! it isn't my personal style of shooting, but my wife takes alot of abstract closeup shots which I love, and she'd love to be able to do that. if you wouldn't mind, what are the specific extender(s) you are using?

[...] In Germany there were some e-shop selling these
for 200 euros, but they didn't deliver outside Germany.

Really? Which one was it?

Hi!

I bought a Soligor extension tube set, look for markings P/AF DG. It doesn't AF though, but it has electrical contacts for use with new AF (read: digital) bodies, and full automatic exposure works as it also has inner lever for controlling aperture. The seller even thought it was faulty as it didn't AF (so I got it cheap). The set has 36mm, 20mm and 12mm DG extension tubes. Works fine, though I once had some contact errors as the tubes maybe have a bit of play when locked to position.

I guess this was the only available set in Finland (in store)... I don't know if it is kept in stores worldwide.

You mean the Sigma 18-50mm is the lightest, right? That is why I
might switch away from the 24-60mm.

feels a bit heavy in my hands, she will just end up not using it =)
I was referring to 24-60mmF2.8. But it seems 18-50mm is even lighter. I am surprised as I thought the wider end should add more wt. OK if that is your (or your better half) concern, go for it as its review is not bad at all.

Sigma 18-50mm
Filter Size 72mm
Minimum Focus Distance 7.9" (20 cm)
Magnification 1:3
Zoom/Focus Control Two touch
Angle of View 69.3-27.9°
Groups/Elements 13/15
Length 3.4" (86mm)
Maximum Diameter 3.1" (79mm)
Weight 15.9 oz (450 g)

I returned the 24-60mm and got the 18-50mm (original) with the 67mm filter.

Going from 19.5oz to 15.7oz is a HUGE DIFFERENCE on the Pentax K100D IMO.... The Sigma 24-60mm was straining my hands after a few minutes of holding it, etc, but the 18-50mm feels just a bit heavier then the kit lens, etc.

I think its was not just the increased weight, but I think with that larger filter size and the end, etc, most of the weight of the 24-60 was on the end of the lens, etc.

Mmm apparently Sigma lenses are going up in price by 12% on May 1st? No idea how much truth there is to that.

But hmm, the lens seems to have a decent range.

How do you like it so far? Sharpness, focus, feel, etc. ARgh I need a faster lens :p.

Hi!

Not a bad lens, your choice. At least most important is that the feel is right when using the equipment. But this kind of lens is a bit special, not for every need. The lack at the wide angle end calls for another lens covering extreme wide-angle to wide-angle focal lengts. I think this lens as a zoom-fixed focal lens. U have in it good IQ, wide aperture, and zoomability :-) This actually replaced my DA40 and I will cover wide angle end later. And now I don't need a 70mm portrait lens, which I have craved also.

I just tested the lens' balance with my K20D, and it felt very balanced in my hand. also it does stay vertical (the camera body) when hanging from the neck. I use to hold 2/3 of my hand under the lens and 1/3 under the body when shooting. Very balanced, enjoy using it.

Hi!

I started choosing a lens to replace DA40 from pics. I looked and looked what lens would have IQ I like. In the end there were three options: Pentax * 16-50 2.8, Sigma 18-50 EX Macro and, yes, Sigma 24-60 EX. Pentax * I could not afford, Sigma's 18-50 didn't have enough focal length to cover my needs for portraits, and it had only 7 aperture blades, no cover for possible future FF sensor, and, actually, when coming to the IQ, couldn't beat Sigma's 24-60. That was my choice, everyone should choose with what ever criteria are important for them.

The lens is heavy, as has been mentioned. But it feels very good in my hand in combination with K20D. This is, after all, covering full 35mm film area and the front lens is very big (77mm filters aren't cheap). At least on APS-C sensor it seems to be sharp enough. The focusing is accurate, although compared to lighter Pentax DA lenses (forexample DA40 and DA18-55 II) there are more (heavier) things to move for the focusing motor and so it doesn't feel as fast.

I hope you find the lens that is most suitable for you :-)

Yeah, I think with a heavier body, the 24-60mm would not throw off the balance overall.

Best wishes!

I can't find this specified, does the Sigma 24-60 come with the petal type lens hood included?
thanks!

I just ordered one myself, I fought hard, but in the end I gave in...

And I always thought that LBA was silly, it can't happen to me. I was ready to buy a wide angle, not this....

One lens ALWAYS begets another lens. camera law.

Just think, when pentax goes full frame the 24-60 will essentially be the 16-45's focal length equivalent.

mine gets here tomorrow, yay!

Now, do I keep my 16-45? or, get the sigma 10-20, the DA 12-24, or the yet to be released (or priced) 10-24 tamron?
