I was flipping through the May issue of Good Housekeeping when I came upon a little craft project where you use photos of different letters (taken of signs around town, etc). I couldn't believe my eyes when I read "Snap photos of letters found in your town (or on a free site like flickr.com)".

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Their suggestion that readers go to flickr.com and steal copyrighted work really p*ssed me off!! A magazine publisher should know better than that! They should have THEIR GH 'seal of approval' revoked for that.

I'll be sending them an email to express my opinion about this article. I am in NO WAY trying to start a letter-writing campaign or incite a riot; I'm only including this information for anyone else who may want it.

The article is in the May 2008 issue, page 98, article title "See and Spell".

If everything happens for a reason, what's the reason?!

I don't see what the big deal is. It's just for a craft project. It would be a different story if people started selling the crafts for profit with your pics on them. I quite often see a nice photo online and use it as a screen saver. Should I not be doing that?

The issue isn't so much with the craft project itself, but rather that the way they worded the article makes it seem that everything on flickr is free for use by anyone for anything (including items for profit). THAT'S what irked me.

True, they didn't need to include the part about flickr. People can figure that out on their own without a magazine advertising it and encouraging it's readers to take other people's photos.

Flickr is a "free site" only in the sense that you don't have to pay for using it. It doesn't mean that you can freely download the work of others and use it for whatever purpose you decide. There is a section on Flickr dealing with copyright and intellectual property policy: http://info.yahoo.com/copyright/details.html
