OT: Anybody using Apple iTouch to display your work?

I use it to show machined parts pictures but that's only about 200 pics. The rest are places I have been..etc. Makes a great carry around album.

However, you can only get small images on it. You can't zoom to 100% but as long as you are scaling/cropping to the iPhone/iTouch size screen you're fine.

As one posted...you can get some other phones that can load large graphics...but your still zooming on a 3" screen.

You can find the 8gig iTouch refurbs for $249 in Apple's Refurb Store (they go quick when they do show up).

Should I buy an iphone now or wait for the G3?

8GB or 16GB for portfolio photos only? .... no movies or massive amounts of music for me.

My other question is if it replaces a notebook computer for keeping in touch with emails & messages, and for things like Google & Google Maps when traveling. How is the quality of the zoom in feature on Google Maps for the satellite views? I use this often to scout photo locations.

For photo editing, etc., I can't use a notebook. I'm a desktop kind of guy for processing.

I guess the camera on the G3 will go to 5mp from 2. What are the other likely improvements? Browse speed?

If all you want to do is show images then you or anyone else tempted by the idea may find it worth considering some of the alternative media players out there:

http://www.mp4nation.net/catalog/
http://www.mp4global.com/index.html

That's just a couple of sites I've come across, but there is a good variety of different models out there. Some of them have nice large screens with 16 million colour displays, which is always nice.

If you're not actually wanting a phone or a fashion gadget, then it could be worth your while.

Indeed,

If you just want an electronic photo device. There are actually better guys out there. The iphone/touch is sort of a jack of all trades. However, I guess few to none of them offer the type of internet access you get with the apple product.

I was in the same dilemma and read all the reviews for Ipod touch and Archos 605 and ordered Archos 605 with 160GB hard disk. It also has a touch screen that is much bigger and better resolution that Ipod touch. You can drag and drop your photo folder and it does not resize. Double touch on the screen and you can see the photos at 100%. Mine will come on Tuesday and I will report the results here.

I played with Archos at Circuit City before I ordered it.

Apple interface is really really good, but Archos is not bad either with its own touch interface.

I've heard some good things about that one. I saw a review and trial of it on TV before and it seems impressive.

Why do people like the iphone/itouch that much?
It has a small screen resolution, how could it be that good to view
image or website?
I have both the Nokia 770 and N800, and they are much capable to view
both web and images because of the higher screen resolution, 800x480.
In fact, I use it to view movies sometime when I travel.
Try it. I know a lot of people that were sceptical but bought one
after using one. The software is the thing that sets the Apple's
aside from the Nokia/Samsung/HTC etc...
Trying it is what sold me on the iPod touch. That interface, built-in wifi, pictures, etc... sold me after playing around with it for about 10 minutes.

Even though I don't have any photos on the iPod at the moment, it does work well and the pictures maintain good quality / clarity even when zoomed in (but not too far).

I got Archos 605 160GB version 2 days ago and it has a fantastic display for photos. Way way better than LCDs on the cameras and it can recognize RAW files too. You can zoom in 100% to check focus etc. color is perfect and the quality of the LCD is as good as my Samsung 22 inch LCD.

It is a jack of all trades, video is amazing and it has a good MP3 player. MP3 player can have some improvements as the volume is a bit weak compared to my other MP3 players. Video is terrific and it can play you tube or any other flash videos out of the box with out doing any conversion.

Hope this helps somebody. I now have about 30GB of my full size JPGs on the machine.
