Quick question. I bought a new G9 from "Sams Club online" last week and the first photo's I took with it assigned a file number in the 1700's.

File number was " IMG_1706 "

I had to set date and time but I don't think the image numbers should have started in the 1700's?

Is this on the memory stick, or internal memory?

You could check the internal memory by using a file recovery
program to see if any files were deleted.

You know what, I was using an old sd memcard with pictures alread on it. I didn't think about that. That would make sence staring high like that cause there were pictures in the 1700's on the card.

There is no internal memory on the G9

It is likely the camera picked up the image number from the memory card. If the card was used previously the camera will shift the image number up to avoid overwriting files on your PC.

That would explain it. Canon cameras will track to the number on the memory card that is used. That is one reason I always start with a new card in a new camera. Your G9 is probably brand new, and reset its counter to correspond to the memory card you put in.

If the resolution of camera not the same as G9 then the G9 probably could not have read it so thiis argument probably doesn't hold...

It is certainly unusual that your photo ID starts so high above 0.

All the cameras I have started out with 0001 right after purchasing them.

The number of photos stored in the SD card does not dictate the photo ID # - the camera does this automatically based on the last photo ID it used and only goes back to 0 if you reset the counter.

Not on my Canon S5IS. I recently switched between two different SD cards without formatting or erasing the previous photos.

After uploading to my laptop, the picture numbers retained their consecutive numbering, regardless of which SD card they came from.

And unless you reset your counter, the photo/image number or ID is a way of determining also how many photos in total your camera has taken.
