I used to be able to look at a photograph and think "nice shot".
Now I get out my 10 x loupe and hunt for the focus plane and check for noise.

Not on 8x10 prints or 50% or larger enlargements on a screen!

That would offically throw you from photographer to geek status...and may qualify you for a job doing reviews on this or any other site that "reviews" digital cameras...

BTW, amateur is an ideal state of doing photographs, IMHO:

• no customer telling you what to do
• you shoot what you like
• your photographs have meaning (to you, at least)
• as a hobby, it's less expensive than other occupations
• you can spend hours on a specific scene
• you can create art

and so on...
