alternatively i am considering buying a 64K film which may be restrictive
on picture
capacity given that i do not carry a laptop around.
my main use is holiday picture taking with family and would like to
print pictures in postcard size.
can anyone tell me how power hungry is the IBM microdrve.
i am presently using a 32MB compac flash film . in this case the battery
lasts for 2 days of moderate shooting about 40 pictures each in low
resolution.
can anyone recommend out of experience an optimum solution in my case?
thanks in advance

Using the Canon batteries & with the LCD on I can get about 30-35 shots in on high res before the battery dies. Hope this helps.

u won't get many pics on a 64k film :-) sorry couldn't resist.

if i am careful with the LCD panel usage I can get 80 photos before the battery dies. although last weekend i took the s10 mountaineering and the results were disappointing, was cold at the top though. get a second battery, u'll be fine.

With the 340 drive loaded, I set my camera to the medium size & medium resolution and used the continuous shot setting, and used the lcd only to compose once in a while, I clicked off over 200 pics and just picked the best. Most were action shots at a company function, and I only needed to use the lcd a few times, (click and hold on stills to show the curious onlookers). I still haven't had the occasion to revert to my 6volt belt pack. I'll use the belt pack at an event where I plan to have the camera on and shooting all day (6.5Ah) and I have 3 of the small rechargables for fun outings where I dont need my tripod, lenses, etc. The microdive is well worth the expense. Just use the LCD sparingly.

I just came back from DisneyWorld and shot about 400 pictures with my S20 with the 340 drive. I brought a second battery and consistently shot about 70 pcitures per battery. I turned off the display when I did not need it but turned it back on too compose the shot. I find the viewfinder poor, it only shows you about 80% of what you are actually going to capture.

I love the 340 drive and with a second battery, It's perfect for my use.

Last night I was out howling at the moon...er, taking some low light pics, and alternately using the flash for comparison. IOW, pretty much a full drain on the battery.

Shot 66 ccd Raw, all saved to the microdrive, all composed using the lcd. While composing shot 67 the p70 shut down. I wasn't trying to save power, so maybe I could have gotten another dozen or more. It's not science, and might not apply to your circumstances.

This past weekend, on three batteries, I shot 200 meg of mostly small fine in burst mode, again using the lcd. Most of the time I saved to the microdrive. About ten percent of the shots utilized flash.

When I have the time, just shooting casual, I save large fine jpegs to the flash card

and then copy them to the microdrive, thinking that I might be squeezing a few more shots out of the batteries. Frankly, I think it makes more sense to put together a 6v battery pack. Sounds like, from your description, that all you need is a spare battery. Good idea in any case.

The advantage of the microdrive is the freedom it provides. No worry about space, or having to edit/delete to make space. I haven't filled it up yet.
