Samples of Tamron 17-50/2.8 vs Sigma 18-50/2.8?

Thanx for asking this question. I have a D40 and would like to buy a fast lens that will auto focus with it. Been deciding which one to get, any advice out there?

It seems that the Tamron is lighter and a bit smaller, but Sigma has a better min focus distance.

The version of the Tamron 17-50 with built in AF-motor is rather new.

In the German DSLR-Forum there have been complaints about slow focussing and bad focus accuracy.

Maybe Tamron needs some more time to solve these issues, so I guess the Sigma is a safer option at the moment.

I have been using Sigma 18-50 macro for many months. I'm generally happy with it which is a better lens than the older non-macro 18-50. The older non-macro was in turn better than the 18-70DX that it replaced.

But most tests rated Tamron 17-50 slightly ahead of Sigma in sharpness. I'm just curious to see with bare eyes how big a difference it is.

Same complaints in the Hong Kong DSLR Forum --> very slow focussing on the new Tamron A16N II. But no one complains about the focus accuracy.

Sigma may NOT be a safer option as most owners reported back-focussing issues.

Umm so seems like neither both may not be a good option. I am tending towards the Sigma for it's 20cm min focus distance. Back-focusing issues? Yeah I heard that some Sigma lens (the 30mm F1.4) has that issue too, but it is only on the D40, seems like if you use that lens on D80, then it is fine. But since I have a D40, so that worries me.

Isn't that the case with the D40. only AFS lenses can be used for autofocus, outside that you will have to rely on manual focus only?

So, for someone how doesn't have a D40/D40x, do you think the older version (without the motor) is the way to go?
Can anyone who has tried both comment on this, please?

Thanks in advance.
