Do you have a recommendation for a home printer that does as well for prints as those that are sent to a photographic lab and prnted on emulsion paper? Will these prints last in a photo album as long as emulsion prints? Looking for a printer that will do 4x6, 5x7 and maybe 8x10's. What is your experience?

IMPO, all of the best home Inkjet Photo printers look as good (or better) than that dinosuar immulsion stuff.

However, probably "none" will last as long as the old film prints, some MUCH less. I really don't care though, as I find printing to be fun, and easy..... and if you have your ink situation straight (after market, from a good company like Inkgrabber) its very cheap, as well.

Oh, and Kirkland Proffessional Glossy (Costco), 150 sheets for $17.99.... so .13 cents a sheet, compared to Canon Pro Photo Glossy, at about .90 cents a sheet.... and I don't even think it looks quite as good !

One things for sure; Unless you just have monery coming out of your ears, you should do your research as to which home printers will allow for aftermarket Ink.

My printer is a Canon iP6000D.... one of the last Canons which would allow for aftermarket ink. If this one ever died (fortunately, the most common thing to fail in these printers is the head, and that replaceable for $50) I don't know what I'd do. I simply cannot afford Canon ink at $14 a cart, compared to aftermarket carts from Inkgrabber, for $4 a cart.

Peace,
Fish

I use the Epson 1290/80 and a friend has the 2100 which has archival inks. The HP is supposed to be cheaper and the Canon faster. The prints are wonderful but I wouldn't recommend photo printers unless you print a lot as the heads clog if not used frequently and the inks are expensive. The better the paper the better the print so think carefully before you buy. Photo books are the new trend and I have seen quite a few lately as I belong to a photography group. Good luck

I use a Canon 4200i which is an ink jet printer, good at normal printing but also great at photos. Because the inks are all separate, it is cheaper to replace the spent ink one colour at a time. I've tested the results against a "real" photo from a print store and felt that the colours were livelier from my printer.
