I know this is a simple question so hopefully there will be a simple answer. I have just purchased a ZIO card reader for reading the microdrive from my D30 camera and of course the computer wants to initialize the disk. I am running a G4, does anyone have a recommendation on a reader that will work with the mac and the D30 camera.
thanks in advance.

Hi Scott

While I don't have a microdrive I've found that for mounting DOS disks or for that matter smart media of flashcards I need special software that allows my machine to recognise the drive and the memory chip. This may or may not be your problem.

I do it all the time, using the Zio, with no problems. But it's with a PC rather than a MAC.

Kind regards, Calvin Wilson

I use a Mac which has built into it PC exchange. PC exchange will not recognise my cards or card reader.I installed the freeware "DOS MOUNTER" and could then read the card reader. I'm using SCSI. I recently installed a USB reader for a friend and that needed a special USB driver for the reader. After the above there were no problems. Since I've just ordered a Microdrive I will undoubtedly be more knowledgible (one way or the other) as soon as it arrives.

I use micro drives with various camera models (Casio QV 3000, Canon S10, Olympous E100RS and E-10, and Nikon CP995 and D1X and loaded them from card readers attached to both pc's and macs with no problems. I never run them from the camera, I always put them in a reader. Almost any CFII card reader will work with mac os 8.6 or above if it has a driver published. I have used two san disk models with OS 9 with no problems. I have also used a Microtech ( I think they also make the ZIO) .This is the only one so far that I have found that works with OS X (don't own a zio). I went to their site and downloaded the OS X driver and it works great. It even posts the folder name on the drive icon. I put the microdrive in and the icon appears and automatically launches iphoto. No fuss. No muss. Just remember to eject it with the software or get yelled at by OS X.

Microtech makes a firewire reader that works with both PC and MAC. Here's a link to one online retailer who sells it for $99.

Scott,

My microdrive came with a 'Zio' as a package. It also came with an installation CD which had both Mac and PC drivers. With the driver loaded I have never had any problems with the Zio and my iMac ( it also reads all my CF cards). Just remember not to format the microdrive on the Mac, do it in the camera.--John W

I use the Microtech Firewire reader (used to use the USB one) on my Mac running OS X. Your issue may be with the way the card was formatted. I have seen that before. I would get the images off of the card and have the camera re-format the card.

As for using the ZIO, upgrade to the Firewire version since you are using a Mac. I can't tell you how much of an improvement it is to use firewire over USB. I am using the 1GB card and it zips on firewire.

Hi All

I also use a Mac. Mine is an 8600 upgraded to a G3. I have Dos Mounter installed. I just received my 1 GIG IBM drive and with my SCSI PCMCIA Card Reader it worked fine right out of the box. No problems at all.

Is that a Microtech Firewire 'Cameramate'? As I cannot get mine to read a Microdrive in OSX on a new G4 iMac (reads CF Type I ok). Microtech support is lousy and they had no suggestions for me!

BTW, on the original thread - My ZIO USB reader works fine for both Microdrive and CF Type I.

Hi Roger

I have two SCSI card readers, one a Microtech the other a Microtech with a Minolta label. I've been using these machines for at least three years and found nothing but hit or miss trouble in getting my Mac to reliably see these cards. When I bought the second machine it came with a light version of DOS MOUNTER. More information can be gotten at their home page - Software Architects - http://www.softarch.com/

However OSX is still a work in progress, you might want to try OS 9 until you're sure your software is up to date. A friend of mine just got a G3 iMac and her USB card reader worked right out of the box. This of course is one of those cheap readers which can only read one kind of card - In her case Smart Media. She is not very computer savvy and only runs her machine is 9.22

10.1.3 fixes a lot of bugs in the readers - check your OS version.
