I have been experimenting with my new G9 for a couple of weeks and I cannot see any difference in IQ with the IS off, continuous or shoot only. Other than the icon on the LCD I would not know it was on.

The manual, p82, states you can check the effect of IS on image blur on the LCD in "continuous" mode, but I see no difference on or off. I have also taken photos with and without IS and carefully examined the results, but they all look equally sharp.

Is there a simple test to see the effect of IS? Also does the stabilization produce any audible noise when on? I hear nothing beyond the continual subtle hum produced by the camera.

What shutter speed and focal length? I'm assuming you were handholding the camera and not on a tripod. The simplest way I can think of is to shoot in Av with IS on and start with a shutter speed that's at least 1/focal length; i.e. if you're at 100mm, use 1/125, then 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, even 1/8 if the aperture can close down enough w/o overexposing. I would zoom all the way in to give you the best test; any shake will be more exxagerated. You can also try it at different zoom levels to get an idea how effective IS is at a given shutter speed and zoom.

Try shooting hand held with ISO 100, full zoom and a shutter speed of 1/10 sec or so. Unless your hands are VERY steady, you will see a difference.

Shoot only or Continuous mode is another matter: I've not found much difference between the two

Thanks. OK, the IS is working and I can see the difference on the monitor now. Due to the recent weather here all my experimentation had been indoors, but outdoors with longer exposure and full optical zoom the effect is very apparent.

I really should have been able to work this out myself and not waste your time - thanks very much.

Now I am going to experiment using a tripod with and w/o IS as I have read in this forum that it might be better to turn it off.

I have to say this really is a very nice camera.
