If you shoot and do all your Post Processing with a Raw 16 bit file, and then convert to an 8bit jpeg straight for for printing, would you lose anything as compared to converting the Raw file to a 16bit tif or 16bit PSD for printing.

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike. If you save as a max quality (min compression) JPEG as the last step before printing, I doubt you'll notice any difference in print output when compared with using a 16 bit TIFF or PSD file. Whenever I've decided to pixel peep at 100% on my monitor, I haven't noticed any difference between the 16 bit TIFFs I'm working on and the 8 bit JPEGs I prepare for printing (PS Q12), and any small differences will be even less obvious in print. The vast majority of printers only use 8 bit colour anyway, so they'll be converting to 8 bit before printing even if you supply a 16 bit file.

For larger prints of images with more severe colour gradients, there may be some visible difference between the 16 bit TIFF and 8 bit JPEG (the the output stage), but I doubt you will see much difference, if any, when printing.

Hi Eric. Thanks for the links. Obviously you've looked more closely than I have and, to be honest, I haven't often saved as JPEGs for printing. The uneven colour tones with JPEG make sense, but as you say, not so much at smaller print sizes.

From my own casual observations, I find in general that small changes and degradations in prints are less noticable than those same changes in monitor displays. I've never noticed a change in print quality from an 8-bit maximum-quality jpeg compared to its original 16-bit tif.

If you can't tell a difference on screen, you won't see a difference in print.
