Welcome to Pentax Challenge #31!

This challenge is meant to be anonymous,
so please do not post pictures here.

=====================================================
13to4
=====================================================

This month’s challenge theme is "13to4".

No, not the time, but the aspect ratio. 13:4 or 4:13. That's your pick. Crop? Stitch? Distort? Your call. Landscape? People? Abstract? Your call. Colour? B&W? Sepia? Your call. I hope you get the picture

Okay. Why that aspect ratio? A friend of mine wanted a background image for her website and it turned out to be 13to4. I found it a surprisingly effective "weird" crop. It wasn't an easy decision to pick this theme and I sincerely hope you'll like it.
I will add a short helper for processing in a reply to this post.

Please note that this challenge allows images 1300x400 and 400x1300 (or smaller), this gives (very roughly) about the same number of pixels as the previous 800x800 rule.

Challenge #31 commences: Now!

Challenge #31 closes: February 29th, 2008, 23:59-59 midnight IDLW – International Date Line West (one second before the start of March 1st at the International Date Line West = GMT -12, that is, the latest it will be February anywhere on Earth)

The Main Challenge and Exhibition Galleries are here:
http://www.pbase.com/pentaxchallenge/challenge_31

*********************
Challenge Rules
*********************

If you have not entered before, please read the rules carefully, as this anonymous challenge is somewhat different from the WMC, date and number challenges.

DO NOT POST IMAGES THIS THREAD, but rather upload them to the relevant PBase gallery (Main Challenge or Exhibition). I will then post them to this thread to keep the thread (and challenge) alive. This way the anonimity of the participant will be maintained. Comments to the images in this thread are welcome. We also get occasional comments on the galleries themselves, and these are also welcome.
Illustrated upload instructions can be found on this gallery page:
http://www.pbase.com/pentaxchallenge/illustrated_upload_instructions

Once you’ve uploaded the image you should send an email to the host (e-mail in profile), including the title of your photo and your name. Please use "Challenge entry" or similar as the subject line to make ID easier. This will allow the host to publish the names of the winning participants once the voting is over and address you if something is wrong with your entry.

The Challenge Gallery is for entries which were taken during the Challenge month (i.e. shot for the theme) with a Pentax SLR, film or digital.

The Exhibition Gallery is for entries which were taken at any time as long as they meet the challenge theme. Any camera will do as long as you are a Pentax SLR forum member.

Password to access PBase is unchanged but for those who still require it please send an e-mail to the host.

Leave EXIF data intact. For composites, please cut'n'paste EXIF of all used photos. All photos used in a composite must be shot during the challenge month to be eligible for the Main Challenge.

Maximum image size is 1300 pixels by 400 pixels or vice versa. This is changed for this challenge!

You may post a maximum of three (3) entries into each gallery.

If you need assistance uploading images send an e-mail to the host (e-mail in profile). We want your images even if you aren't an experienced PBase user

If you, for any reason, cannot send e-mail to the host, post a "help me!" message here. The host or another helpful soul will assist you.

If you, for any reason, cannot upload your image(s) to PBase, it is possible to e-mail them as a properly formatted attachment to the host (e-mail in profile).
*********************
Voting
*********************

After the Challenge period ends, the forum votes to determine the winners. All forum members may vote, even those who did not enter an image. Voting is done in a separate voting thread established by the Challenge host. There will be three winners chosen from each gallery. When the voting is complete, the winning entries will be named and their winning entrants identified.
When voting you will not be able to vote for your own pictures.

The entrant who submitted the winning entry in the Challenge Gallery will serve as host for the April Pentax Challenge.
==========================================

Best of luck to everyone. Let's get it on!

This is just a suggestion. If you'd like to help your fellow challengees, provide another "tutorial" for another software (or correct mine).

1. Download Irfanview from http://www.irfanview.de
2. open image
3. go: edit-> create custom crop selection (shift+c)

4. in the dialogue window, enter 1300 as width and 400 as height or the other way round.

5. you can resize the crop rectangle by pressing control, clicking the edge and moving the edge

6. you can move the crop rectangle by right-clicking into it and moving it around
7. the status bar (top) shows 0.308 as the aspect ratio if everything is right.
8. do ctrl+y to crop.
Then save, upload, the usual.

If you have questions: Ask! :)

Best of luck
Jens

Great idea for a challenge! I think you will get a lot of creative entries (plus my boring ones) ;-)

If you use Lightroom you probably already know how to do this, but just in case:

1. Go to Develop mode
2. Click the Crop Overlay icon (or press the R key)
3. Click the up/down arrows to the right of the Aspect ratio
4. Select "Enter Custom"
5. Enter 13 and 4 then OK
6. Drag the crop rectangle as desired
7. Go to Library mode
8. Click Export
9. Select Resize to Fit and enter 1300 and 400 for W/H
10. Export!

Hi BWG!
Hi Jens. Can you check your email.
Yes. When I'm awake ;)

Okay, nothing secret in there, I think?!

BWG asked whether we can post images larger than 800x800 to pbase. Of course it normally is possible. But if you experience problems as BWG knows of, please contact me/the forum. I assume that in those cases something else is causing the hick-up.

There has already been posted one 1300x400 shot, so it must be possible.

I guess we won't find out until someone here has the problem and I can look at the file at hand together with the person having the problem.

Cheers

Hi Shane!
how do you crop in photoshop ?
[i use the trial and error method at the moment]
I'm not a photoshop user, but I found this article:
http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/glossary/g/aspectratio.htm

I used this google search, maybe you find other articles there which are better?
http://www.google.com/search?q=cs+photoshop+crop+aspect+ratio

Good luck and please post again whether or not it helped.

Cheers

Jens,

Why don't you have an example images for the two galleries? The challenge too tough for you? As the old saying goes, I think you need to put your money where your mouth is. ;-)

Honestly, this is basically a ultra-wide angle/pano challenge no matter whay kind of spin you put on it. Neither of which I do. Don't think I'll be entering but I keep an open eye whenever I shoot.

Hi Tim!
Why don't you have an example images for the two galleries?
I never do when hosting a challenge. I don't want to influence people.
The challenge too tough for you?
I have 100 13to4 shots on my HDD :)
As the old saying goes, I think you
need to put your money where your mouth is. ;-)
Trust me, by the end of February, you will have seen six 13to4 shots by me. And I hope to have seen some by you!
Honestly, this is basically a ultra-wide angle/pano challenge no

This is wrong and if you really think that an aspect ratio or crop defines the application in such a way, you are limiting yourself very much! Slap your 50-200 on and prove yourself wrong! :)

Looking forward to your 13to4 shots :)

had a quick glance at that link and it was easy enough that i didn't have to read it after i found how to select it [that was my stumbling block]

open an image
select crop tool,
type 13 and 4 into the width and height spaces [leave res blank]
click on the arrow beside the crop tool image up the top,
click on the square button and save the preset,

then select the "crop 13x4" from the menu and drag and drop cursor to the image [this was the bit i didn;t know how to activate]
then when you drag your cursor on the image it will keep the 13 x 4 aspect ratio

cool ... thanks Jens :)

You can definitely post larger images - the default that you'll see if you're just crolling through, will be the "large" version - 800 pixels on the longest size. If you post a larger version though, it'll still be available for viewing as "original" - just click on that below the image. If you only want to see smaller versions, click on "medium". As you hit "next" through the gallery, it'll stick with the size you've chosen.

Or, at least, how I do it.

1. choose the Rectangular Marquee tool
2. under "style" in the tool bar, pick "Fixed Aspect Ratio"
3. plug in 4 and 13 (width and height)
4. select what you want from your original image
5. go to "image" "crop" and voila - there it is
6. resize to the maximum for the challenge
7. do any sharpening, etc. you want
8. post to the pentaxchallenge website

Jens, any idea why I am loosing the EXIF information when using Infanview to convert from PSD to JPEG? It seems only to have started losoing EXIF information since I upgraded to v 4.10. I have checked in Adobe Bridge and the EXIF information is definitely there in the PSD file.

Thanks Betsy. Some posters had trouble in the last challenge and I thought that (over 800 pixels) was the problem.

Hi all!

As said, the challenge is meant to be anonymous and this implies that the shots you post to the gallery have not been / will not be published elsewhere before the voting ends.

This isn't clearly spelt out in the rules, so after receiving a question about it, I thought it might be better to answer this here.

The rules are relaxed for Exhibition, at least this is how it has been treated in the past and I don't want to change this. No need for EXIF in Exhib, BTW.

BTW, I'm really happy about the excellent reception so far and will post shots today.

Cheers and keep them shots comin'!

Hi Andy!
Jens, any idea why I am loosing the EXIF information when using
Infanview to convert from PSD to JPEG?
No idea. I am not using IrfanView, but in my workflow, something similar happens. You should (IMO) tell the IrfanView team.
As a workaround, you can use the free (postcard-ware) EXIFer
http://www.exifer.de/
at least for the camera I use (DS).

Otherwise, look further down in this thread on info how to crop in PhotoShop (I assume that's where you got the psd file from).

Cheers

Thanks, Jens. In fact one cannot convert from PSD to JPEG in Infarnview without loosing EXIF information, the conversion has to be done is Photoshop. Once in JPEG format the original EXIF information is kept when cropping, etc.

The odd thing is that I uploaded new images to the competition site, images with the EXIF intact - replacing the images I initially uploaded. Still the EXIF information links are not available for my images. Is there something I am doing wrong?
