Just got the Sigma AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS from Amazon. Wow!!

rich, checked out the $417.00 price at sigmaforless and they confirmed it
They have the HSM one which I need on my D40 camera so I can get AF focus
the place not far from me by car. And it $82.00 less than at BH photo.

Where are they exactly, Brooklyn?

As far as HSM, I believe this lens, in Nikon mount, only comes in HSM. The older non-OS 18-200 comes in both. And to add to the confusion, the Canon/Sigma mounts are not HSM. That's my take in reading Sigma's website. Go figure.

Amazon shipped mine today.

All Canon mount AF lenses have motors, perhaps just not the "HSM" variant.
The Sigma 80-400 OS, in the Nikon mount, is a sample of a lens with a motor,
but not the "HSM" motor.

They are in Brooklyn. I visisted their stated address and bought a filter from them. They are a mail order shop---the retail store is a different name. The retail store is mainly a photo development shop. The online store is in the basement (where you cannot go). However, given the rent costs in Brooklyn, I am not surprised by this arrangement. The folks seemed nice enough and they went out of their way to find the right sized filter for me. Obviously, I never ordered from them online.

Try shooting indoors with your newly purchased Sigma lens at your D50's acceptable high ISO. No flash. Check the IQ and focus responsiveness.

I doubt it will have a better image quality than the 18-200 VR. I've also read that it focuses slow on some sites, although Shutterbug.com gives it a very good review, so i could be wrong.

Best thing to do for others deciding on which lens to buy, is to try both lenses on your camera body at a local camera shop and decide there.

Rich, Sigma4less is located 5417 New Utrecht avenue in Brooklyn
new York. ( 718) 851-3510 open monday 10-6:30 pm thru thursday and open

10-1:30 friday Closed on sat and sunday. They said I could arrange a special appointment for sunday to check the lens out. I prefer going in person rather than

have delivery where I may not be home and a big sitting on my stoop. Just read an article in Pop Photo Feb issue on lenses and they said that the Sigma 18-200 OS beat the Nikon 18-200 VR by a notch in optical quality. I guess it says a lot there.
Oh, I did not respond to your post because I had gone out for the evening.

Yes, it really is a great lens. Unfortunately my wife again has the D50. I will put some images up this weekend.

I have a few very satisfactory Sigma lenses, including the non-OS non-HSM version of your new lens. The slowness and lack of OS makes it a sunny-day lens at the long end, but still, it is what it is and for some reason I just don't find myself yearning for the latest VR whatever. Maybe I am just rebelling against what I am seeing as the tiresome "Nikkor glass or nothing" stuff around here. Makes me feel like I am playing on the losing team, and I feel strangely guilty that when one of my humble Sigmas helps me to a pleasing capture, thinking it must be a fluke :)

Have fun with the lens.
