Whenever I try to run EOS Utility (or Picture Style Editor) I get this error message:

"EOS Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

The other Canon applications (DPP, ZoomBrowser) work great.

I have the latest versions from the Canon website, I have also tried uninstalling/reinstalling (from web and from CD) without success. Camera is turned on and detected by windows. I'm running Windows XP SP2, everything is updated.

Any ideas?

How did you uninstall dpp?The right way is to go control panel > software> remove/uninstall dpp.

Then you must reboot the pc as to clear the registry settings and delete other icons and shortcuts.

Then install new from canon cd.Once finished you must reboot to make those registry settings active.
Then install the update from canon site. After install reboot again.

This should give you a clean and working dpp .

On my Windows XP SP2 machine with a 40d, this turned out to be (after running the entire gauntlet with tech support, who did a yeoman's job but couldn't quite figure it out) an incomplete install of BOTH Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 AND Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. While Tech suggested reinstalling 2.0 (and there's even a file called dotnetfx.exe to repair it on the 40d Solutions CD), neither of us realized that 1.1 and 2.0 are mutually exclusive--2.0 does not overwrite 1.1 and you seem to need both for the EOS Utility (thanks Microsoft!). I had to use the "Custom" selection in Windows Update to find this out--if they are both installed on your machine they will show up under Add-Remove Programs.

Now all of the Canon Software--EOS Utility, DPP, Pic Style Editor, Zoombrowser, etc.--is working fine. BTW, I also let MS Update install .NET Framework 3.0--again mutually exclusive--and it didn't seem to hurt anything.
Hope this helps....

Same problem on 1DS Mark III

I am experincing the same error, Canon T/S could not fix either. They sent a new CD with the same software, same problem. It also affects picture style editor. Software on MacBook Pro works without a hitch. Running Windows XP SP2. I have even tried in Safe mode with same results. I have disabled everything in System Tray.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I have the exact same problem running WinXP.... Everything works great xcept for the EOS Utility. From the event viewer, I conclude this is also a .net problem:

EventType clr20r3, P1 eos utility.exe, P2 2.1.0.1, P3 466df61c, P4 mscorlib, P5 2.0.0.0, P6 4333ab80, P7 ee3, P8 0, P9 n3ctrye2kn3c34sgl4zqyrbfte4m13nb, P10 NIL.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp .

What did you do exactly to properly install .net (which packages, order, etc.)?

I'm going crazy...

ditto to Moto1....

EOS Utility needs .Net V2.0, and will install it for you as you install the Canon sw.

If you need to unload/reload EOS Utility you will probably need to unload microsoft.NET first, and then allow the Canon CD install process to find/install .NET V2.0 for you as it installs EOS Utility, otherwise you may get the message...

"EOS Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

This also removes all knowledge of your Canon camera hardware from the system, and it will be re-discovered once all sw is back, as you re-connect your camera.

Thanks moto1.

thanks to these posts I solved the problem with the Canon ESO Utility error:

just go to Configuration --> software --> Microsoft .net framework 2.0 --> repair.
After that the EOS Utility workesed !
