PCLinuxOS 2008 is now starting to be released. The Full version is not out yet, that is the one with all the most common applications already installed. However, the Mini Me version (the one with only the base OS) is out. And now, based on that, the "PCLinuxOS Digital Photography Edition" is available in both Dutch and English. You can read about this here:

Great!

Thank you for the news!

[..]

Is there a full list of packages that are preinstalled/available, or something in greater detail about what makes it different than any other distro, rather than a generic blurb/highlights? Especially pertaining to "digital photography" ?

Allan,

The blurb at the end of the original link is all I know. As he says there, just about everything included comes out of the standard PCLOS repository. So, in that regard, there is no difference from PCLOS or other distros, other than the convenience of not having to search for all right packages. On the other hand, if you want to know what makes PCLinuxOS stand apart from other distros, that is a different question. I have been thinking about doing a writeup on that subject. But, to be brief, I find PCLinuxOS, especially the just released 2008 version, to be the easiest to use, the fastest (other than Gentoo), and the most polished distro I have ever used. It is also, beautiful. :)

Here is a brief recent review:

Doesn't look too compelling, does it offer anything not normally
found in PCLOS repos?
Additions to what is normally found in the repos:

Scripts and plugins for the Gimp, including DBP and LQR
UFRaw-Assist
RawTherapee
Color profiles
Contrast curves

These are normally not ever offered in a packaged way, but are collected and installed on this release.

The full package list is at http://www.pclinuxos.nl/DFPE/rpmlist.txt

You can get the exact same result with the bog standard MiniME and some internet elbow grease ;-) This is NOT a contender to- or fork of- PCLinuxOS, rather a convenient way to get a pre-installed environment dedicated to photography. It also serves as a localized remaster for the Dutch and Flemish PCLOS community, although it is bilingual English/Dutch.

If you disregard compile time and the constant re-configuration required, THEN Gentoo is fast. In the real world, it gets in the way of getting stuff done, IMHO (I used Gentoo for about 4 years). The last time I tried PCLinuxOS, it was really out of date. I'm very happy with Fedora 8 64-bit, but the more the merrier!

Does the GIMP support 16-bit yet? If not, it's pretty useless for DSLR RAW shooters...

48bit? no. 16bit, not exactly but it'll do 24bit and 32bit if you count the alpha channel.

does every raw shooter need that kind of colour depth, i know it can be useful but many people shoot raw just to get white balance flexibility. if you must have it there is Cinepaint, i think that does 96bit floating point colour if you feel the need.
