PCLinuxOS 2008 is now starting to be released. The Full version is not out yet, that is the one with all the most common applications already installed. However, the Mini Me version (the one with only the base OS) is out. And now, based on that, the "PCLinuxOS Digital Photography Edition" is available in both Dutch and English. You can read about this here:

The addition of Lightzone could certainly enhance the digital photography edition, too.

What version of digiKam is included (0.9.3 is final now), and have
the internal libraries related to Dave Coffin's dcraw.c been upgraded
to the current version, to support raw files from newer cameras like
my Sony DSLR-A700?

What versions of UFRaw and GIMP are included?

Digikam is at version 0.9.2-4pclos2007 , so sadly the answer to your question is no as to the dcraw.c that is internal to Digikam. Look below however and you will see that the regular ufraw/dcraw is ffully up to date although I did not dare to put the CVS version in, waht is essentially a stabile release OS.

UFRaw is included at version 0.13, together with the plugins for the Gimp AND Cinepaint

The Gimp is at version 2.4.2-2pclos2007

The list of Gimp related packages is as follows:
libgimp2.0_0-2.4.2-2pclos2007
gimp-lqr-plugin-0.3.0-1pclos2007
GREYCstoration-gimp-2.5.2-6
ufraw-gimp-0.13-1pclos2007
gutenprint-gimp2-5.0.1-1pclos2007
gtkam-gimp-plugin-0.1.13-4pclos2007
gimp-dbp-1.1.5-2pclos2007
gimp-2.4.2-2pclos2007

Cinepaint related:
cinepaint-0.22-1pclos2007
libcinepaint0-0.22-1pclos2007
ufraw-cinepaint-0.13-1pclos2007

Raw conversion related:
libkdcraw1-0.1.1-1pclos2007
rawstudio-0.6-1pclos2007
ufraw-0.13-1pclos2007
dcraw-8.61-2pclos2007
ufraw-gimp-0.13-1pclos2007
libraw1394_8-1.2.1-2pclos2007
ufraw-cinepaint-0.13-1pclos2007
RawTherapee 2.2 as 2.3beta2 was not working stabil on the system

Thanks for the info.

Unless that's a typo, your dcraw.c is also out of date. Your list is showing an older dcraw.c 8.61 that's not going to work with a number of newer cameras.

The newest dcraw.c is 8.81

This is the dcraw.c that is included in the UFRaw rpm. I have made every effort to make sure this release is upgradeable through the regular repos and that, apart from textfiles, Gimp plugins and scripts and RawTherapee (which was installed in opt) nothing would prevent a user from updating the package list through Synaptic from the standard PCLOS repos.

As soon as a new UFRaw will appear in the repos, dcraw will update with it and untill that time, for those that already own a camera that was recently released, I will offer an pre-compiled dcraw for download with the caveat that it is not a standard pre-supported package. (it is one self contained executable so it should not cause a problem anyway).

Isn't pclos a rolling distro ?

Would not whatever features are added to the DPE version be available in the repository eventually for those already using pclos ?

-cheers

You are very right and I have made every effort to make sure this edition will update as if it were bog-standard PCLOS, for convenience and future-proofing.

.....In this particulay distro making it more suitable for digital
work than other Linux Distros? (other than included software)
--
None that I am aware of Scott, sorry. I cannot manage or release a full distro, both time and the team are limited. Apart from that, it's imperative we stay unforked from PCLOS.

If you have any suggestions to make though, I'd be thrilled to have a look at them to see if they can be included within the above caveats.

If you already have any of the up-to-date distros fully pimped up with photo software, this release should not be too interesting to you. But then again, I am not interested to fight distro-wars, there's many a great distro out there and it is personal preference and choice that save the day!

Cheers and thanks for looking!

Ufraw seems to work better on here than on my current pclos. With my E-1, images started off darker than with any other raw converter, but with the DPE they appear normal. Hmm..... can't figure out why...... but if it works ..... I'll go with it !

I like the makelivecd right there on the desktop . I've not used it before , so it would likely encourage users to use it.

The only problem I had while using it was when I wanted to power off, it was in dutch. I just pressed enter and it happened to have the correct button highlighted, but it's a "surprise" most people may find them themselves not knowing what to do at that critical point. Maybe that part could be written in both languages ? Could a script change that for the user ?

Other than that, it worked like any pclos should ..... great !

-cheers

First of all, thanks a mil for taking the time to testdrive this animal. As to the language settings, they are easily changed back to English by making the necessary adjustments in the KDE Control Center (Kcontrol-System-Login-Language) and localedrake run both as user and as root, select English and confirm.

Next time round, it will all be in English. The only thing remaining in Dutch should be the boot-sequence blurb that says "Booting the system....Press ESC for details", but that too, should disappear after a bootsplash package update.

Again, thanks!

I've used ubuntu for awhile but am temporarily back on windows due to hardware issues. I wonder how compatible this version will be with hp laptops?

I am currently running PCLOS 2008 on my Thinkpad T61 and everything works out of the box. Runing Compiz-Fusion was just a matter of installing it from the repos and enabling it on the Control Center.

What laptop do you have and what are its specs?

for some reason this computer does not like the 2.6.22 kernel. I read somewhere that laptop hardrives are having issues with it. From what i see on the web site its using that kernel. I guess I'm going to have to wait on a new kernel so that I can have wireless too.

Is this new flavour of PC Linux relatively easy to remaster (for example, add w32codecs, msttcorefonts, compile the latest versions of software you want to use, etc.)?

How about booting from a USB key after tuning it so that it meets your needs (installing plugins, and/or commercial software like Bibble Pro, etc.)?

That kind of thing is more attractive to me, so that I can carry my OS and applications in my pocket and boot into it from most PCs.
