I got an SX100 IS for christmas. What is my best option for rechargeable batteries? I've read that the battery life is not great on the SX100. I will primarily keep this camera in my backpack while hunting, so it will be used in cold conditions much of the time, which is not ideal for battery performance.

This one is easy to answer - get "Hybrid" NiMH batteries like the Sanyo Eneloops.

Conventional NiMH batteries may have a high capacity rating (ie, 2900mAH), but they have a short shelf life. This means that they may take lots of pictures if you put a freshly charged set into the camera and start firing away until they run down, but if you leave them in the camera for a few weeks they'll run down on their own, even if you don't take any pictures. According to comments I've read they typically loose up to 3% of their charge EVERY DAY.

The newer "Hybrid" batteries have a lower capacity rating (typically 2000mAH), but they'll hold almost all their charge for over a year. In practice this means more shots for most people. I regularly get around 500 shots out of two AA Eneloops in my Canon A710, and I expect their performance in an SX100 would be very similar. That's using the LCD all the time, reviewing most of the shots I take, but not using the flash much if at all.

The only reason not to use the hybrids is if you usually take several hundred pictures within the space of a week or so - in that case the higher capacity of some conventional NiMH batteries may outweigh their their short shelf life.
