Is my G1 normal?

I just purchased a refurbished G1 from B&H, and I've noticed two strange things about it. I'd like to know if these things are normal, and if I should return the camera?

First, in low-light photos, I have at least 5 pixels that are stuck "on". Here is a (large) sample image of what I mean:

Second, when I turn the camera on, the lens extends and pops the lenscap off the body. I was expecting the camera to detect the lenscap and refuse to extend.

Is this incorrect behavior for this camera?

Thanks!

Stuck pixels (like s..t) happens, it is bad luck, with new camera I would try to get new one, but refurbished, I don't know.
The second problem is strange, mine G1 beeps and reports the lens cap is on ...

Hi Blackrock

I have one hot pixel at 1 second but after 1.3 seconds(noise reduction) the pixel is ok.
Second, when I turn the camera on, the lens extends and pops the
lenscap off the body. I was expecting the camera to detect the
lenscap and refuse to extend.
Mine does the same but then my lenscap is fairly loose compared with my G2.
Is this incorrect behavior for this camera?
Do a test to see if you get hot pixels at about 1/30 1/15 1sec. and then at 1.3 sec.

If you don't see hot pixels at 1/15 or 1.3 sec I would say your camera is ok

Ps the hot pixels will show the brightest at 1 sec.

If it shows up on your prints then you may want to change the camera. But do expect the next camera to show the odd hot pixel. If not now in the future.

Hope this helps

Taken with a G1 at 8 seconds (this picture is shown

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I'll try this tonight!

In a new camera, I would not have accepted that. If you have any form of warranty I'd say return it for repair. My G1 developed 1 hot pixel after 11 months, and I sent it in for repair under warranty.

That depends on how snug your lens cap fits. You see, the camera tries to extend its lens, and when it can't it beeps and displays 'lens'. Mine was quite snug and when switched on with the cap on my camera beeped and said 'lens' in its LCD screen. I switched lens caps with a friend of mine who complained his lens cap came oof too easy, and now my lens cap pops off when I switch the camera on.

You I guess you just have a 'loose' lens cap. Not something to worry about, I'd say.

Cool pictures of sports cars, taken with a G1.

Try and ascertain if the 'stuck pixels' are truly stuck.

You will get random hot pixels in low light exposures but if they are always at the same coordinate x,y they are probably stuck rather than noise.

They're annoying when you know about them - main question is as they visible in unmagnified real-world images? I changed my original G1 because of stuck pixel which was obvious in indoor photos - bright spot on dark objects.

Also try the movie mode - my original G1 stuck pixel which was very hot gave an obvious blemish on the admittedly low quality video clips.

Try and take the lens cap off manually! Even if the camera can detect it is detecting the resistance when trying to extend the lens so that can't be a good thing in itself.

My new, refurbished G1 does the same thing. I also use a new G2 at work, which does beep and stop when the lens cap is on. Agree with the previous posts, looks liek you just have a loose lens cap. No biggie. Personally, I prefer the lens to just push off the cap. Having to restart the G2 after getting the LENS massage is kind of annoying, especially when you are in a hurry, which also happens to be when you would most likely forget to remove the lenscap. Just me, perhaps...

Thanks again for all the advise everyone. I especially understand the hot pixel and noise reduction better now.

Thanks!
