I have so many questions i don't even know where to start. So I've been playing around with my recently purchased C-3030 and LOVE IT! But I've been having a difficult time understanding how to set the correct size settings.

1. I've been taking HQ quality pictures, but haven't, with my knowledge, made any adjustments to picture sizes. How does one adjust the size of the pictures you take, and what does changing the size of the picture really do other than take up more or less memory? Does a certain setting correspond to a certain size print out, like a 4x6 or 5x7 picture?

2. Most of my pictures at the moment turn out at about 660KB of memory - set at the HQ quality and I don't even know what size setting, I think 2400x1500. When I double click on the picture, after having downloaded it to my computer, through Adobe PhotoShop or the Olympus Camedia software, the picture always opens up at about 25-30% and it's really not perfectly clear until I change the % to 100%, but then the picture is too damn BIG!
a) Can someone please help me correct this problem!?
b) Is it as simple as setting the picture size to 640x480?

c) What is the most common setting - or does it really vary widely depending on one's personal preferences?

3. I see a lot of people posting pictures on this message board. The picture quality on these are amazing! What are the settings that most of these people use?

4. What are some of your experiences/opinions of actually going to the photo store and developing pictures? What's the quality like? As I asked in a previous question, do the Olympus camera size settings (640x480, 2400x1500) correspond with the size of the developed picture (4x6, 5x7)?

5. What are people's opinions of different 'print shop' type software, like the adobe photoshop, olympus camedia software, microsoft photo editor, or Imaging for Window?

6. Having the option to take a picture in color, sepia, black & white, blackboard, or whiteboard is an incredible feature of the c-3030. But if I take a color picture, can I change it to any or all of these different settings once I've downloaded it to my computer? Is there a feature on any of these 'printshop' type applications that does this - or does this just have to be done on the camera end itself?

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I really appretiate it!

The "size" of the picture is somewhat tricky to explain. The size of the picture

depends on how many pixels per inch the display or printing device you are using can
(or is instructed) to show.

Thus if your screen only displays 75 pixels per inch then a 2400 x 1500 pixel picture
would take up 32" x 20" on the screen - WAY TO BIG!
But the same picture if printed on a printer that prints
300pixels per inch would measure 8" x 5" - A PRETTY GOOD SIZE

Similarly a picture that is 640 x 480 pixels would measure approx 8.5 x6.5
on a screen that displays 75 pixels per inch - A PRETTY GOOD SIZE
but would only be 2" x 1.6" on a 300pixel per inch printer- WAY TO SMALL!.

The best solution is to take your pictures at at HQ quality. If you want to use the pictures

on your computer use a software program to reduce the amount of pixels in the image to 640 x 480 or smaller

depending on the size you want it on the screen. BUT if you want to print the pictures (or send them to be

developed) keep them at the high resolution and tell the developer or program the print size you want. The

developer or program will then print the picture with as many pixels as it can to fit in the size you wanted- making
the picture as clear as possible.

I think you might get more replies if you ask one question per post.

Here are my suggestions on how to choose image size.

1. For good quality printing you should target 200 pixels per inch.
This goes both for home inkjet photo printers, as well as online
or other commercial printing services that accept digital input.
More than 250 is almost always more than you need. Less than
150 will appear either blurry or will have visible "jaggies". The
2048x1536 of the C-3030 is good for about 10x14 at most and
is very good for 8x10. The 1600x1200 of a C-2020 is good for 8x10.

2. The 10x compressed modes are a better deal than 4x compressed at
the next lower resolution. The files are smaller and contain more detail.

3. To view your high resolution images on the PC screen, use a good
viewer that will automatically scale the image to fit your screen. My
favorite viewer is available from http://www.irfanview.com/ .

I usually take pictures with my C-3030Z at HQ resolution and then download it to my CAMEDIA. So that the picture will fit my computer screen at home (17")

I resized it to 1024x768. I then save this with a different name to preserved the original HQ @ 2048x1536 for printing at any sized up to 16x20(?). Or you may

use your camera SQ2 high quality 1024x 768 so you don't have to go the hazzle of resizing saving you more time and space. But remember though SQ2 High quality resolution 1024x768 takes more space than the HQ 2048x1536.

Hope this will help a lill'
