I recently purchased my Canon 400D and it does not "beep" .....This may be a blessing to some, but this indicates a problem to me ...In the menu the beep is set to the "on" position ...I have also tried setting the AF to all 3 different settings and still nothing ....I have also tried doing a timed photo using the timer , and STILL no beep .....Hopefully this is just user error ....Any idea's ??....Thanks, Jim

Is there a volume setting? .... is it at zero?

I checked the manual and there is no volume settings that I could find ..Jim

How are your pictures turning out? Are they in focus?

Is your lens switched from AF to MF?

It won't beep if there's no focus.... it won't focus if it's in manual mode.

The pictures turn out fine ...It auto focuses and everything seems to work out fine, but it does not beep when focused, nor does it beep when the timer is set .....It count downs properly , and shoots at the end of the count down, but no beep ....I've tried focusing in different modes, with different lenses, and no beep ....A defective camera maybe ??....That's all I can figure at this stage of the game ....Thanks, Jim

Tried going to the most quiet spot possible ....Still no beep ..All I can hear is the focussing ....Jim

Just played with mine. Had to use AF one shot. Mine does not beep AI
servo mode.

Jim
Mine beeps in aI servo mode.
You might be confusing with AI Focus? because AI Servo shouldn't be beeping, as there is no actual specific point that's focused, it's continuous focusing. no beep.
One Shot: beeps
AI Focus: beeps.
AI Servo: No beep.

Tal,

No beep on any of them on my camera ....I'll have to bring it in to Canon ...I have to have it calibrated anyway ....One more thing they can do ....Thanks, Jim

If the focus is set to AI Servo it will not beep. In AI servo the camera never locks focus therefore it will not beep.

My 350D also seems to be lacking the "beep" (a condition it may have had since new?). I've tried the Menus and verified this was set "on" and AFAIK there is no volume control. All other functions seem to work normally and photos turn out fine and from what I can see in proper focus. I've considered sending this to Canon for service, but except for having a "beep" in self timer mode, I don't really miss it too much.

One interesting point though. On a recent visit to my local Camera store, I tried the "beep" on a 400D (just so that I'd know what it's supposed to sound like). I really couldn't hear it, although the (younger) staff at the store had no trouble hearing it. The sound is either so weak or in a frequency range that my "old" ears can't process (I have some hearing loss in one frequency range).

It's unfortunate that Canon haven't provided a "beep" function that is more functional for a wider variety of users. Even if this was working on my Camera, I suspect I wouldn't be able to hear it, so the function would be useless anyway.

Del,

That's a good point ....I'll go to Best Buy tomorrow and check out their XTi and see if I can hear it ....If I can't , and the staff member can, I know it's time for a hearing aid !!....That's scary !!...I'm already loosing my mind !!....Is my hearing going too ?.....Gosh I feel old !!.....Jim

Brian, that's one of the methods I used to test the "beep" function in my XT. There was NO sound that I could hear!

However, even if I was using the 400D that I tried in the store the "beep" would have been useless for self-timer shots. If I was in the photo and several feet from the Camera, there's NO WAY I would have been able to hear that faint sound. If that's the best sound the 400D is capable of, it's virtually useless to me.

THIS is the beep ? .....I had to put my ear right next to the camera , and I mean RIGHT NEXT to the camera about a 1/2 inch away !!.....Why bother ?....Now I know why folks say that it's useless .... My hearing is not the best in the world, but you would have to be a dog to hear this thing with any kind of volume !!...(no offense to anyone with very keen hearing ) ..If they're going to have this feature , a volume control maybe ? .... I'm glad that I have been getting along without the beep ... At least now I know that my camera is not defective ....Thanks to all for their information on this subject ...It's appreciated ...Sincerely, Jim
