Just checking with you guys to see what you think is the best photo editing software for the money. I only have the Nikon picture Project that came with my Nikon D50.

thanks

For quick and nice local adjustment of the brightness, color, etc., I like Capture NX. Photoshop is capable of probably anything you'll need for photo editing but it might be a bit more difficult to learn as well.

I thnik best value for the money would be either PS Elements 6.0 or the latest version of Paintshop Pro. Both offer everything the typical amateur would need and either one can be had for less than $100.

Nothing can beat The GIMP in value per dollar. Since the number of dollars it costs is zero, the value per dollar is pretty high, approaching infinite, in an undefined way.

It can be tricky to learn, but once you get the hang of it, I hear it's great. I've been able to figure out how to do relatively simple things with it, but I have not explored it fully.

I know it was mentioned above and all, but I thought I'd put a mathematical spin on it.

Gimpshop is a add on to GIMP that acts, looks and works very much like Photoshop and is also free. This way you can follow many of the Photoshop tutorials that are online.

Also trying CaptureNX that came with my new D300. Only $1799.00 and you get a free Camera. :-)

PSE5 is about $30 on pricegrabber last I looked and has all most would want.

i know that you can get software with many more feature than lightroom for the same money or less, but to be honest, lightroom is the only photoediting software that i really enjoy using and that i like working through a big shooting with. i wouldn't trade it for any other software, as nothing i have used comes even close to the workflow in lightroom.

I've used it for decades all the way through from version 3 when it was shareware, through the JASC-marketed version and now version 9 just prior to its takeover by Corel. About 80% of the functionality of Photoshop (which I also have, actually) but at 20% of the cost.

Nikon Capture NX!

If you choose Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom -Be prepered to take an masters degree on handle the program. I am amazed hoe people by free will is prepered to spend houers like an whole university degree just to handle those softwares, I would NEVER do that, A waist of time! Only for neards!

I aggree, have used Paint Shop Pro since about 5 and now have the latest. Excellent program, easy to learn, and loads of auto features.

Having just downloaded Gimp shop I think the advice has to be try this. Think about spending money if you eventually find something this can't do. Its way better than Gimp and close enough to photoshop to mean if you do end up buying the real thing you will be on your way to knowing how to use it.

Has anyone written a book on Gimpshop?

If any post processing is required I find it easier to start from the RAW file.

.........it would have to be Paint Shop Pro X2. It's a very powerful
program that has somewhat caught up to PhotoShop. Handles all types
of raw files and and can do quite a few edits & effects.

It's worth the $.
