Ok, I was over reviewing messages on the Sony forum...and guess what???
Someone used their Sony 707 to shoot the new comet in the sky!

I would think the UZi folks (2100 and 700) could do it too and better!!

Here is the message from the Sony Forum.

How about getting some of the B-300 and T-CONs out and lets see this comet through the lens of an UZi!

I just attempted it tonight, but failed :(

I have found that it is much brighter right now. It shows up about 30-40 mins after sunset and then begins to lower in the sky... Where I am trees got in the way. I attempt a quick handheld shot, but that is not too good.

I then got my tripod out and did an f7, 16sec shot and that was too bright... the comet was then below the trees and I was not able to get a good shot. I would imagine those with B-300 and T-CONs will be able to get some fantastic shots... it is really bright in the sky... between West and Northwest...about 30deg to the right of the sunset in Texas.

I am think f7 and somewhere around 4sec would be best..
RichO,

For those interested in this challenge, here is a viewing chart of
the comet.

You can get the details here about where it will be...
http://www.space.com/spacewatch/ikeya_zhang_sidebar_020309.html#21

Right now it should be west by northwest one hour after sunset, but coming up in April it will apear before sunrise.
Haven't been paying attention....please tell us more about the
comet......when to look for it....I THINK it should be around 7:30
PM Central time.....is that correct?.....and looking to the east?

Hey Rich, not looking to pick a fight, but considering the is an OLYMPUS forum, and considering there are many OLYMPUS cameras up to this challenge, why not invite me, and my lowly C-700, to this party?

I did!!

See...
"I would think the UZi folks (2100 and 700) could do it too and better"

2100 and 700... even the E100R...they are all equipped with the same 10x Optical Zoom and with a tripod they are all equal!!

I just figured the ones with less than 10x would not want to try, but if it can be seen with the naked eye you should be able to shoot it with a camera!

Awwwwwwww Right!! That's POWER for you!!

I can't wait to see the photos you get... and you should have several opportunities coming up through mid April.

Someone posted that two other comets were recently discovered as well..
I did!!

In the same location is a link to an interactive star chart.....waaaaaaay tooo cooooooool... You put in your location and time zone and watch the widdle stars craw across the sky as you change the time!!

http://skyandtelescope.com/observing/skychart/

It helps to pin point objects in the sky (well the natural ones) easier. For example: Those in Texas would be see the comet closer to 7:50-8pm.

I did see a very strange dimly lit object in the chart...looked like a toaster wearing a nightgown!

KIM!!! Have you launched your toaster????

Well, the good news is that I think I saw the comet - very bright! The bad news is, by the time I went in, got my teleconverter screwed onto my camera, and got back outside, it was hiden behind clouds :-(

Oh well, there is always tomorrow...

Make sure what you are seeing is not Venus or Mars...according to the star chart here in Texas Venus is visible first after sunset then the comet and then Mars...

I had the same problem here...it was suppose to be clear and for just a few minutes there was a clear spot...but not longer enough to spot the comet.

The Moon which was straight overhead with some planet or star just to the West of it. It was very clear straight overhead and I could see all kinds of stars but to the NNE on the Horizon where the Comet was supposed to be it was hazy and I barely could see some stars and never did see anything that looked like a Comet even with 10x binoculars? Oh well I went ahead and shot a few shots at the moon and whatever that was to the West of it and boy did I get some interesting things. At 16 seconds ISO 200 at F-8 I got some super duper hot pixels and things so I just copied and pasted all the stuff on one photo and here it is in all it's splendor, LOL..... :o)

P.S. I enlarged a couple of the hot pixels 10 times & the moon was shot at F-8 1/200 sec with the UZI, TCON-14 & B300 stacked.

the Moon. The two above and to the right of the moon are shots of it at diff settings cropped and pasted there. Also the streak on the far right is Jupitor taken at F8, 16 seconds exp. With the Earth rotating at a little over 1,000 mph it don't take it long to move a ways... :o)

To see the comet I think it will require knowing exactly where it will be in your latitude using the star chart. I know here last night I could see Venus which was right where the chart said it would be. But as the time neared for the comet to appear and Venus to set, the clouds rolled in across the horizon.... I have only seen a couple photos taken of the comet...the one I posted the link to was taken by a Sony 707 without a scope!
