Mike,

What are you needing?

Are you looking for product knowledge and service, or just the best price?

ECS in Drummoyne are good, as are Vanbar in Camperdown.

The best prices are not in any of the stores, and while some of the stores have some good staff, that, too is not necessarily where the best knowledge might be located.

A good friend of mine is in Sydney, she asked about getting a D300 in the US, but I told her to look at the shops in Sydeny, she needs to talk with them about the camera, play with it, then (maybe?) buy one, or get on the list.

Thanks

Mike

I think ECS is up there.

I'm getting mine from camera house in Port Macquarie, he seemed to be the best price wise and from a knowledge point of view.

Ask for Dennis.

In terms of price? ECS and VanBar.

In terms of service? No idea. I'm from Toronto, Canada. ;-) ECS, Vanbar, and I guess Nikon on Broadway (on Broadway/George St, just between Central station and Sydney Uni.)

Actually, I don't really care much about service at camera shops, as long as they aren't pushy and clingy. They don't need to know a lot more than I do about a camera, although sometimes, if I'm in a not-so-good mood, I do ask them a question that I know the answer to. If they give me bull* , I stop listening to him.

But usually, you only really need knowledgeable camera staff if you know nothing about cameras, and you didn't do your research. I know enough about the D300, and I've done my research. On the other hand, if you don't know much about cameras, then it's hard to know whether you're getting good service, because you could easily be led astray by the salesperson.

Don't get too excited yet about the D300 in Australian Shops.

I rang Nikon Australia yesterday to query them about the 'Worldwide release' and was told "........ we are expecting our shipment sometime in December". I wish he was more confident than "expecting".

:(

mmmmm might have to look abroad

Foto Riesel in the city are pretty helpful and nice guys too.
I'll second that.
Knowledgeable and will meet others confirmed prices.

Being an Asian and ex overseas student, I found it hard to really talk technical the first time with all the shops mentioned

[ ECS, Nikon on Broadway, Camera House in Broadway, CCC , DigitalCity , Fletchers and prev G&V ]

IF I find one that want to talk to me, is one shop that tried to sell me a D50 while I was looking for a D200 :P [the ones across CCC , in George St Georges or something the name was]

Out of all, I still find FotoRiesel , ECS and Nikon on Broadway are the best [if you count Melbourne, Dave @ Camera Exchange is the best. I met him once but we chat like we known each other for a long time]

In FotoRiesel there is one older guy and younger guy who is very knowledgeable.
The rest, imho are just sales :)

Nikon on Broadway move around 2 blocks in to the street they were in and they are close Sat and Sunday now :(

ECS are good , but when those guys are involved in a cat fight .. all the regulars there should know what it liked :D

IF your friend is looking for a D300, ECS is having a live demo on them this Friday and Saturday. europeancameras.com said it is an RSVP event and I can't come down as I have a pre-wedding shoot that weekend .

Good luck !

They also didn't even bother replying to my email when I asked them a question. I was willing to buy from them because they're nice and don't get enough credit here. Only ECS, Foto Riesel, Kayell, and Vanbar get regular mentions when talking about good camera shops. However, their website is down, and they didn't reply to my email. Their website was already bad to begin with. I was in their store 2 years ago and told one of the employees (an older man), "Your website doesn't seem to work properly with any of my browsers?"

"Really? Are you using Internet Explorer?"

"Um......no. But no real person who knows his way around a computer actually uses Internet Explorer. It's a popular browser, but Firefox has already gotten very popular. Your website won't even work on a Mac!"

"Well then our website is fine. It's your computer that needs help to run our website."

"........!?!"

But really, it's a great shop. :-P

:-(

If they don't have any D300 by mid-December, my heart will explode. My Nikon is broken, and I've been waiting for 2 months to get a D300. I'm going to Japan in mid-December. If I knew I wasn't getting one, I would have just bought a D80 and waited for the D80s or D90!
