Hi,

I have the Nikon AF-S 28-70 F2.8. Can anybody tell me what's the warranty period on this lens? As I remember it was a very expensive lens ($1600?)

It doesn't focus automatically at start. I have to turn the focus ring manually, then it "may" automatically focus AND it makes a little squeaking sounds like it needs to be oil or something.

Assuming you bought it in the US and did not buy a gray market unit and did not buy it used, you are entitled to get a total of 5 years of warranty from Nikon USA. Even if you did not fill out the extended warranty paperworks, you don't have to worry about it. All you need is a copy of the original proof of purchase.

I think that the minimum for a lens repair is $200, BUT you have to weigh that against your alternatives-- do you discard a high-priced lens if it can be made almost new for perhaps $200.

There are places other than Nikon which service/repair things, but they are not cheap either because of the technical skill and labor involved.

As you go thru life, don't forget to stop along the way to smell the roses.

Doesn't sound major..could just be some dust or grit built up over time clogging up the focus motor ring. Take it by a reputable shop that does repairs... it might just require a cleaning which will cost you very little.

Sending to nikon will cost you a bit of time without it unless you're an NPS member.

Cathy :

You will have received, in the box containing your lens, all the paperwork needed, including the document you had to fill out and send to NikonUSA (this part can not be completed on line, as the registration can, :-)

Roger that - I just called Nikon in the last week or so (even if you call from the U.S. they switch you to an office in Canada) and the rep definitely said all you need is the proof of purchase and Nikon will provide a 5 year warranty regardless of whether you filled out/sent in the warranty card. Hopefully that is the right answer, but clearly that's what I was told.

Are you referring to Midstate?

If so, then my answer is yes. They have been servicing Nikon cameras for 20+ years and I trust them with my cameras 100%.

They work on equipment from the Providence Journal, so I'm sure they have fixed many a 28-70 2.8. Give them a call - once speaking with them, I think you'll be impressed.

If your problems are only during AF, not MF or zooming, and you hear a squeaking sound I'd bet your AF-S module is failing. This is becoming common in AF-S lenses over 5 years old like yours.

Nikon USA warranty is 5 years. (hmmm)

The AF-S repair from Nikon is almost $400.

Price shopping the repair to 3rd parties is difficult because you'll need to pay for shipping/insurance (to & from) and diagnostic fees only to learn that they may charge as much as Nikon.

Sorry.

Cheers,
JB

True, but some places, like the one mentioned above, offer free estimates, and are often much less expensive than Nikon.
