This might belong to the lens forum but since people talk about lenses here all the time I thought I'd give it a go.

Im having some serious lenslust! in short, i want more reach. the 55-200VR would be a safe choice but I'm not sure i want to change lenses all the time.

That brings me to the Sigma, here it is 250euros cheaper than the Nikkor18-200mmVR which is out of my budget by miles, the sigma barely fits in.

So does anyone have any experience with this lens? I'd love to hear some first hand experiences and see some sample picture's. Links to reviews would also be nice as i haven't found too many.

I have no experience with the Sigma, but thought these reviews of the Nikon & Sigma (by the same reviewer) might be a useful comparison for you:

Although I have more or less decided for the 18-200 VR, the Sigma is still an alternative. Interestingly, according to the 'subjective index' of this reviewer (when you compare both) the Sigma is actually better.

But of course I am not sure whether or not that is worth anything - the test of the Sigma is on a Canon btw.

I was looking at that lens today, but i have one question pending about it, Will it AF on a D40?

Ok, i know now it must say HSM to be compatible, but seems this HSM is not yet available in the US market. Also, its price will be similar to the Nikon 18-200, so there is not much of a deal in comparison. Of course that is MSRP, which not always the true price, but i doubt it will be under 600.00 USD when it becomes available.

Would be great if it have the same price as the AF version, which is around 350.00 USD.

Here (in the Netherlands) the Nikkor is around 610 EURO, but the Sigma is about 500. As I said above, I am leaning towards Nikkor, but the Sigma (with a zoom lock to avoid creep when carrying!) is indeed a cheaper alternative.

Please let mi correct my self, i gave the price of the Normal, not stabilized, Sigma 18-200 lens AF. The best price of the Stabilized one i had found is 480.00 USD. This one has a MSRP of 600.00

The HSM version has a MSRP of 820.00 USD, that's why i calculate its street price around 600.00 (75% of MSRP)

The Nikon 18-200 has a price of 690.00 USD, if the Sigma gets available for 550.00 or under, them it will give a considerable price advantage.

Still is a bit high price for me, so the 55-200 VR has my preference.

With the dollar so low the price difference between Euro and Dollar is quite big. The prices you name are pretty close(a bit higher) than the ones here all tho the prices here are in euro's which make them quite a bit more epensive, which then makes the difference bigger.

But lets not make this about prices, i want to hear experiences with this lens :)

I'm pretty sure B&H photo has this lense for $549.00 (U.S. currency)
and I belive it is has hsm

It says DC OS, but when you enlarge the photo of the lens it has "hsm" on the barrel, and on the sigma website it says this lens is hsm.......

I'm also thinking about this lens for the D40x to start with, but not complete sure about the combination if it would turn front-heavy or so. Reading through early reviews the lens is all its worth but it's not easy to decide whether to go for two Nikkor compacts or choose this heavier one & would D40x manage it (would it block AF-assist/ flash etc)

Here, in Poland prices are:
  • for sigma HSM about 1900 PLN, it's 470$ and 690 euro.
  • for nikkor about 2400 PLN, it's 595$ or 875 euro.
Despite price difference I'm not convinced by sigma. Check out strange resolution charts on http://www.photozone.de

On the Canon forum (don't kill me!) most people seem to be enthousiastic about the Sigma, but of course they don't have the 18-200 VR to compare with.... May be I am not searching good enough, but I haven't find direct comparisons between the two (in fact, I found one link, but have lost it again....)

From my experience prices in Poland are usually just silly I must
say. And I always wonder what is the reason behind them...
Probably all around the world people think, that Eastern Europe is very very rich and can afford this outrageous prices ;-) E.g. there's a first announcement in one of polish stores of d300 with a price of 6000 PLN for body only. It's 1490$ or 2190 euro...

I don't have both, but my friend has it. He like (not love) the Sigma 18-200 OS, the OS really work and in the term of sharpness it's okay, he only cons is the sigma can't match the color of the Nikon

he prefer the sigma in price wise but If the price is not a subject he recommended me to grap the nikon version.
Hope this help
