I just ended a conversation with the sales mgr. from Henry's downtown Toronto main location on Queen Str. 5 minutes ago and he confirmed to me that they had been notified last Thursday by Nikon Canada that the 1st batch of D3's will be restricted to pros only. I called Henry's today after Peter, on a different thread "D3 Canada Price", had been contacted several days ago by Henry's stating this. I'm no pro and I have 5k deposited on a D3 and will not get interest on this till the next wave comes out who knows when. Joining the D300 list now I probably would have to wait as long as the D3 2nd wave so I now have to weigh my options.

If I read this correctly, you put down $5,000 for a $5,500 camera and you won't see it until Nikon satisfies the pros first? You are a patient person.

In the USA, NPS priority orders are at the discretion of dealers. When you place an NPS priority order, you are instructed to inform Nikon of the dealer you would like to order through. Then it is technically up to the dealer to honor the NPS ordering system (you contact the dealer as well).

Thanks for confirming this Pierre.......we have no recourse but to wait. As you said, it's too late to get on another list.

Like I said, I don't mind waiting if this applies to all of us (non-pros). I'm very happy with my D200, I know the D3 will open up more opportunities for me but this disappointment will just make me appreciate the D3 more.

thanks for confirming , what i have posted at least 3 times, the problem is these people are so amateur, they do not listen.

NPS, guarantees nothing, you still need 5000.00, you have to pay for the camera.
If you are on a list, you will get your damn camera, sooner than later
Nikon does not dictate who gets cameras.

This is why, among other reasons, that I don't buy from Henry's. There are other stores that treat their customers equally. A list is a list and my $5500 is as good as the next guys.

That is ridiculous!

How do they know whether you are a pro or not? Do Pros have a special certificates?

My local dealer in Montreal (which might get into trouble for talking too much, so I won't tell who it is) says that there IS a NPS thing with preorders and that the store chooses to allocates cameras on a first come-first served basis. The best they'll do for NPS that ordered before the rest of the pack is call them first, but otherwise everyone's equal.

They also said: no official release date, no official price, no bodies ordered yet. But that was 2 weeks ago, I guess they ordered their lot by now.

BTW, they sell the D300 at 1899 :) (no, it's not available)

you actually put a deposit down on the camera????

i have never heard of that...even the discount stores don't (are not supposed to) charge your credit card until it ships..

things different up in canada???eh????

NPS member #. Working Pros that request a unit should be serviced 1st. Its good for Nikon since most pros get published and more people will see their work.

from what I've heard, Canada's first shipment will go to Pros working for publications (papers, magazines, etc). that might/probably includes sports shooters...

I know this because I asked about NPS priority and was told that NPS will fall below the above on the "who gets them first" list. Lesser (than the above Pro) NPS members might not even see any on the first shipment(s)... wedding/studio/architecture NPS, for example..

just what I've been told from a smaller shop that deals to many Pros/NPS since the D1 years...

they finally came up with a camera that could compete with Canon. It seems as if most pros have already switched to Canon, while the D200s and D70s purchased by amateur enthusiasts kept Nikon in business. Is this how we are repaid?
