Another lens on the way!

Carl:

One thing or actually two that Sony could do is (a)change the gear ratios and (b)the materials the lens shaft/gears are made from. In the former case, it could make the lens faster and in the latter quieter.

Sony needs to match its lenses to its cameras. Tamron in the interest of cost control may use an average ratios across all the mounts it needs to service. Not sure they would want to change shafts/gears for each mount.

Just a thought

Yes, I'm curious to see how it compares with the Tamron, although I don't espect any major difference! I've thought of buying a Tamron 18-250/3.5-6.3 but I have too many lenses already within the same range :
Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 ( 4.1x )
Tamron 24-135/3.5-5.6 ( 5.6x )
KM 100-300 APO/4.5-5.6 ( 3.0x )
Minolta 70-210/4 ( 3.0x )
Tokina 80-200/2.8 ( 2.5x )

If the 18-250 showed a comparable optical and mechanical performance to those ( at least equal to the T 24-135 ) I'd gladly substitute the 1st, 2nd and 3rd by one, although at a 13.9x zoom ratio I doubt that a bit! I also don't like it to be so dark ( f6.3 ) at the high end, it should be at least f5.6 ( even if it had to be a bit larger and heavier. - but that's my taste ... ).

Always having fun with photography ...

I would love to get your feedback if you have a few minutes. This is part of a longer thread outline some tricky lighting coming up next weekend and what I should do for a walk around--

Also have some questions regarding filters too...

Just check this out and the larger thread it is part of if you have the time. I know you are busy...

Thanks in advance!

I didn't ask, he was being rather ambiguous with the whole FF issue on the high end camera. Either way, it's good news, I have been eying the Sigma 24-70/2.8, so I may just wait a little longer for this one...it will also give me the opportunity save up more money too, being a Sony CZ lens and all.
FF image circle?

Because if it is, that is definitely for the new A900, I'd bet my
life on it.

The Tamron 18-250 is a terrific all around lens. The focus was slow on the A100 - to be expected with such a long zoom range; much faster with the A700. It's an ideal lens for hanging out at the zoo.

I just visited my local Sony Style. My non-scientific impression is that the Sony version does auto focus faster. I'm thinking they really did tweak something besides modifying the aperture blades and adding a silly mm or two to the length.
