Morning everyone - just finished reading the tread on storage choices and i have narrowed it down to 2 the image tank and the new jukebox media by archos (www.archos.com)

i thought the aditional options were nice and i like the idea of having an mp3 with me as well as using it for my pics

i know that the image tank is expandable but lets just say that 10 gigs in both options would be sufficient. is one better or more stable than the other? is it not a good idea to use your storage as mp3 player ie bumps and jars along the way?

i am leaving for a 5 week trip in may so i do have sometime to decide but still would like to get used to using it and testing it out so i know i wont loose any shots because its a bad machine

thx --russ

Just read the updated page. Photo modules not available YET. Like many other products lets see if they get to market. If you need storage now then the tank is the way to go.--A.Small

i know its not available yet but i do still have 2 months to go - i bet it will be out by then.

i am assuming you have the image tank then?

i like the fact that the tank is expandable but i dont think i will need anything bigger than 10gig - thats why i was comparing the 2

i didn't like the mind store as it looked to flimsy.

for the fact that unless i am on extended vacation i will not use the storage other than that BUT if i can use it for others things like an mp3 or video cam then its worth the money

i know i sound like i have already decied but -- yes i like versatiliy and expandability but i need to make the most of it.

if there are problems with these 2 machine then i want to know about them and factor it into my decision.

thx russ
How do you plan on downloading your images from CF or SM to the
Archos HD?

It tank is made for this purpose.

Does the Tank have lcd viewing of stored photos?

Also, rumor has it that Archos will be releasing the photomodule by then end of March. They just added prices this week, so that is also an indicator that it is getting close.

Russ,

I don't know the jukebox, but I've been very pleased with my Image Bank (Tank). I guess it boils down to what features you want and how much you're willing to pay for them. BTW, I bought the raw Image Bank and dropped a 20 gig IBM drive in it. It's also useful for transferring very large files from one computer to another.

The IB or IT does NOT have any viewing capabilitie. Rumers do not mean that hardware is available. I wish you luck.

Wile I agree rumors do not mean hardware is available or about to be availalbe, but in this case I think we will be fine. Archos has done this same pattern with past products (place info on website, add more details to that info and no price, add price, release) and the timeline for this particular release has been consistent with other product launches from them.

Now, if this was Nikon, or Palm, or Apple releasing a product.....

I give myself about an 80% chance of having one of these by first or second week in April, and 99.9% chance of having one by the start of May.

:-)

I was considering the image bank as well but i will be in Turkey for 5 weeks and i am not sure about the power supply - in addition I thought the jukebox was more versatile and can use it more for mp3 when not using it for photo storage - any opinions on that - i know most of my friend suggest that i not carry it around like a walkman that it is still a computer hardrive and not a "toy" but i am assuming and please tell me if i am wrong that if it was designed as such and is for portablity that i can rely on it to be tough if not tougher than the image bank.

how long have you had your IB and down sides - what do you wish it could do that it doesn't - would you consider swithing to archos IF you could.

do you think that if i want and mp3 player i should buty that seperate and go with a true storage machine only ?

I have a 256 meg card for the camera as it is so days trip pictures shouldn't be a problem. also thinking of a oylmpus zip drive just for really cheap way of doubling the 256 card on the fly .

Thx for your input Russ

The IB package I purchased comes with 120/240 Volt adapter, lighter adapter, and a battery pack.. If there is electricity you can most likely plug it in. The battery pack takes AA batteries. So does my camera so I tend to have quite a few with me.

As for the quality of the Archos Device. I would assume they are using standard comercial laptop drives. I doubt VERY much if they could/would have a drive special produced. So you end up with the same drive in the Archos as you would in the IB, Digital wallet etc. There maybe more shock protection in the Archos device built around the drive, but thats it.

A harddrive is a harddrive. A drop will most likely render it useless or at least very unreliable.

Hi Russel.

I have used the Image Bank (or Tank, in my case) with much pleasure for saving pictures UNTIL I wanted to used it for transfer of mp3-files as well.

I have recently bought an Olympus DM-1 player/dictation machine which uses Smartmedia Cards (like my camera).

Unfortunately my Image Tank had no facilities to transfer files from the hard disk to the Smartmedia - it works only the other way! So I had to revert to the Digital Wallet instead, which lets me transfer both ways.

I can now use my Smartmediacards in my camera, empty them into the Digital Wallet, and then put mp3-files from the DW back on the same cards to be used in the DM-1 player. And after a dictation job with the DM-1 I can back up the resulting DSS-files immediately to the Digital Wallet.

My Image Tank - which I was very happy with until my needs outgrew its possibilities - has found a new owner now...

Frank.
