Canon USA's written response re 1D MKIII focus issue (unacceptable IMHO)

What did you want. Canon to replace every camera with a new 1D Mk
IIIn???
I want my MK III cleared of the cloud that now hangs over it -
primarily for re-sale value. Particularly now that they have publicly
admitted that there is an identified problem - but yet a problem that
they themselves cannot apparently identify by serial number.

And, I have no doubt that Canon will do that. I'm not concerned with
what they will do - I know they will do the right thing. After all, I
bought the camera knowing about the problem and was confident enough
of what Canon would ultimately do to plunk down $4,500.

My point is not what Canon will or won't do. My point is
disappointment with its effort to discourage people who have not had
problems from doing what is absolutely necessary to preserve the
resale value of the camera and obtain the peace of mind that ought to
be associated with any new $4,500 camera.

Seems OK to me. They state as per the response quoted from Canon USA below that there will be a simple test that the customer can do to determine if any particular camera is faulty. For future resale concerns, show any potential customers the fact that your camera passes the test.

Q. Are all EOS-1D Mark III cameras affected?

No, says Westfall. Canon is planning to provide a simple way for EOS-1D Mark III shooters to identify if their camera is among those affected. Canon is not suspending shipments of the camera; reading between the lines, this is probably because recently-manufactured bodies already contain the sub-mirror adjustment.

Some posters at dpreview seem to be still denying that the problem exists - amazing!!!

One question though....

Were you happy that canon didn't release the MKIII on time and they were delayed??

Some here were up in arms when the camera didn't come out early in May and were screaming at everybody because of the delay, now they are upset because the camera was released with a bug, what gives??

You can't have it both ways!!

If Canon had come out with a statement saying that the body had a Bug and the release must be delayed for a few months, a revolution would have started and a "I'm switching to Nikon" outcry all over the forums!!

It's a No-Win situation for any manufacturer!!

Y
Canon knew the autofocus problem before the camera was released for
production, they even told Rob Galbraith about it on the
preproduction unit he used.
Then they did not find the cause of the problem but they released the
flawed camera for production anyway willfully deceiving the customers.
They should recall all the cameras for correcting the problem, to me
their attitude handling this problem is not acceptable.

Canon's been doing just that and actually continues to do so. Why can't dpreviewers as well.. :)

"This issue may cause unstable focus prediction performance with moving subjects in AI-Servo AF and continuous shooting modes PARTICULARLY IN HIGHER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES"

Then "If you are not currently experiencing this issue with your EOS-1D Mark III then it will not happen in the future."

Doh!
Not even if the seasons change?
What about vacations to warmer climes?
That tropical assignment you have been paid to cover?

Basically, its a cop out.

Canon NEED a general recall beacause, IN THERE OWN WORDS, just because you haven't noticed a problem to date DOESN'T mean the problem won't appear in the future, despite what they claim a couple of sentences later.

Its an interesting legal point: Canon claim that if you haven't had the problem so far on your camera then you won't see it in future, hence they don't need a general recall. I'd like to hear their defence in court against claims for expenses and damages from an arctic dwelling 1D3 user who is contracted to shoot a tropical event. "my camera works fine - oh shoot, all my sunny shots are out of focus!"

If Canon's claims as to the cause are correct and their "test" does not involve heating the camera to certain temperatures (how overheating then gets covered by warranties is another question) then the test is meaningless.

If there ever was a case for a recall on ALL of a particular model, this is it.

Canon are copping out on this and its gonna hurt.

Most photographers buy cameras to take images, and buy stock, real
estate, bullion, etc. for resale value.
Resale value is part of the equation when estimating cost of ownership.
Surely cost of ownership is a relevant consideration in all purchases
unless your funds are unlimited.

For over thirty years, both as an amateur and as a professional. I've bought cameras with the intent of using them up.

Canon intentionally makets the 5D to people for whom resale value should not be a consideration.

Much of this seems a little silly the day after.

The dust will settle, we'll all get our precious cameras "fixed" and the world will keep spinning.

In the meantime I'm proving to myself what a sucker I really am. I just took delivery of a new 50mm 1.2L (ordered one day before the rebate announcement - perfect timing).

I guess I'll have to go over to Lens Talk and start blowing off steam there. Unfortunately, that seriously flawed lens is taking stellar pictures on my seriously flawed 1D MKIII, so I have yet to find anything to complain about.
