Where is OIS on H9?

I have a smudging problem with my pictures and it occurs very often. I read that I should turn off OIS when shooting with a tripod which should help with smudging problem. Where is OIS on H9? Is OIS the same as anti-blur function?

Press MENU. It's the last item on the bottom.

True you should disable the Steady Shot when using a tripod (with the remote, or the self-timer). I doubt though that having the Steady Shot on is the cause of the "smudging." Can you post an example?

thanks. here's my example. look at the bush. if u enlarge it it's all smudged. color diffussing. i can't get crisp picture quality with h9. i can do it better with my old dsc 85 from 2002. please help. is my cam defected?

I used the P mode....so i guess the camera automatically took the pic with ISO 200..........I've always used the AUTOMATIC mode whenever I took pics with my old DSC model and the pics were perfect. but now with dsc h9 with automatic mode the pics were horrible. so I tried P mode....and still it's bad. i am not good with changing ISO and whatever when I took pics. and sometimes i don't have time to do that.

do you suggest any mode I should use?

Hi Buckgirl. Thanks for posting.

When the H9 first came out, there was a lot of discussion regarding the exact same issues you describe. It seemed that some of the H9's would use excessive Noise Reduction under certain circumstances, even at fairly low ISO's. The results were similar to what you have posted. Do a Search for "H9 Smearing" or "Watercolor" and you are likely to pull up a few threads covering this subject.

At 100%, this shot looks fairly typical of the output from the H9. There are a couple of things that might be contributing to the excessive "smudging" in your example though.

First, is that the bush is somewhat out of focus. If you look closely, the grass at the base of the bush appears to be more in focus. Slightly out of focus areas seem to suffer the most from this "smudging."

Another thing that can cause excessive smearing is motion blur. Camera shake falls under this category, and if good holding techniques aren't used, then the image will show smearing even with the Steady Shot enabled. I recommend disabling Steady Shot whenever shooting a moving subject, or if the camera is on a tripod (while the remote or the self timer is being used). If you are still gripping the camera while it's on the tripod (using the shutter button), then the Steady Shot can actually help. Leave it on.

Now I suspect that there may have been some defective cameras out there that exhibited this smearing in a larger percentage of shots (as you describe). It might be worth your while to find another H9 to do a side by side test with. A faulty Steady Shot or lens misalignment could well be the cause.

Well, hope I've helped some (and not clouded the issue even more). Lots of folks here are very happy with their H9's. Hope you reach that point.

thank you so much.

maybe mine is defective because at best buy when I tested H9 it was so good that's why I ordered from sonystyle.com for a silver one......hmmmm.

my old dsc model took nice pics even when I am not 100% steady...but this one seems to be affected by motion so easily...i can't be 100% still when i take pics u know. hmmmmmm what a dillema~

thank you.

When you choose P mode you have to choose the ISO you want, the camera does not choose it for you. It will choose the aperture and shutter speed but it will not choose ISO.

I would take the picture again at ISO 80 and P mode and see what it looks like. As R2d2 says some of it may be due to out of focus, personally I feel some of it also is because of the ISO 200.

Keep trying Buckgirl, I still love my H9 and believe it takes great photos when you get to learn the capabilities of the camera.

why is H9 so complicated? I used to own DSC-S85 and it was very easy to use and took great pics for 5 years. With H9 there's so much to think about. Sometimes i have to go with automatic when there's no time to think but people say with automatic mode there could be smearing effect.

why do i even need to worry about ISO? it should point and shoot as this camera belongs to the point and shoot categoy....

have you ever had smearing effect on your photos? can i see your photos?

I took pics inside home and outside and there's always smearing effect and i can't take good crisp photos at all with H9. I've gotten a clear crisp photos only i took pics of face myself.

i feel depressed.......

I hear your frustration Buckgirl. The H9 is an advanced point and shoot and requires a little bit of reading the manual and just playing with the camera to get the best out of it.

Regarding the P mode it is really an automatic mode but you can get caught out with a couple of settings, such as ISO and where the camera focus's and sets exposure, this is true as far as I know of all cameras that use a P mode.

You might want to try some of the scene modes to see if they give you a bit more success.

Maybe you just stepped up to the next model a bit too quickly. If you just want to take snap shots and have the camera decide it all for you possibly the H9 is not the camera for you. On the other hand if you want to expand you photography and get photos that the automatic modes will just not get you then it may be worth playing with the H9 a bit more.

Good luck with your decision and there will always be someone here to help you out with your questions.

Here are a couple of my photos

Taken from across the road hand held. It was a shame that the Pee Wee just moved his head as I pushed the shutter button.

A flash photo taken during the day only possible because of the Sony's ability to sync the flash over 500/sec resulting in a black background.

Same as above a flash shot during the day resulting in beautiful soft colours and a black background.

Buckgirl these are the types of shots you can get using manual controls. Here I used 4,000/sec and F8

Here I used P mode but with spot metering on the clouds, which made the hang glider almost in silhouette.

Hi Buckgirl. Some cameras are better in auto mode than others and as relate22 has indicated, the H9 is an advanced P&S and it performs best when used in the manual modes and it does take experience to get the best out of it. It should, however, work reasonably well in auto or some of the scene modes, except Sports where a problem has been identified. There is certainly nothing wrong with having a camera and using it in auto and not everyone is interested or has the time to learn all about manual controls. Here is what I suggest:

1. Try the camera in the scene modes i.e. portrait, landscape etc. These are auto modes but it lets the camera know what kind of shot you are taking.

2. If you are still not happy with the results, return the camera to Sonystyle, assuming that you still can.

3. On the off chance that the camera you got was faulty, get another from a different source. No point getting another from Sonystyle as it may come from the same batch and could also be faulty. If Sonystyle will only exchange and not give a refund then go that route.

4. If you are still not happy after getting another H9, return it and try another model or brand. There are quite a few superzooms to choose from.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Yeah i returned it and sonystyle was nice about refund. sonystyle.com only does returns by the way....I might go to the sonystyle store and try to get the H9 and try one more time............hopefully they don't have restocking fee as the sonystyle.come didn't...

wish me a luck!

I see what you are saying...it's so sad that i am not capable of using H9...

I love sony and H9 was about to be my brand new camera...which model would I go to now? I don't want to go to another brand. and i like full zoom camera not those tiny ones that fit into purse.... got any suggestions for the model?
your pics are very nice...
thanks.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Seems like this camera gives off more frustration than it's worth!!!!

Actually, I had the same problem and Sony sent me another and I am pleased to say that it performs much, much better.

You may want to consider the H3. It's considerably cheaper and the results are pleasing.

Surprisingly, a friend of mine bought a T100 camera and went to Alaska with it and got some very incredible shots. They have a newer model that is 12mp which would allow you to crop more instead of zoom.

Again, look at what the H3 has to offer. Other that, if you do stick with another H9 it's worth the learning to master it. I've spent several months with mine and am finally getting the pictures that I want on a more consistent basis. I am happy with mine and do not want to upgrade or change camera for a few years. I had the H5 for nearly a year and for me, the H9 was a major improvement for the type of pictures that I take.
