Hi All

My first 40D had small but noticable FF the second copy seems AOK - these images taken with the 70-300IS all if I recall at 320ISO (overcast had to dial in +2/3 EC for some during the walkaround) Note:- all bar one I think (the last one taken with "sharpness" & "contrast" set at zero ~ the last one I used Style Standard but in all cases I needed to PP as I prefer to do and have always done with my 350D. I suspect that at "sharpness" of 4 or greater they would like fine out of camera.

Must try to find other subjects and light etc to try out the fuller functionality of the 40D :)

Yes, both of those are I think fairly young and are unlikely to be competition for the bigger fully mature stags.

Thank you.

The odd thing I realised was that for the last one though I had shutter speed 1/100s the eye and 'face' is not as sharp as the antlers and neck but the eye was in the same focal plane ~ the only thing I wondered and 1/100 should have been fast enough was that as the stag was roaring could there have been 'vibrations' shaking the softer tissues of the face causing that slight lack of critical sharpness......???

The contrast seems improved but did you do a lot of sharpening? It seems so on the 1st one (might be just me though); I liked them very much to begin with. Looks like the slight sat/contrast boost was beneficial, but honestly I think we have a tendency to sharpen too much. I kind of like a touch of softness (NOT OOF, accurate focus is of course hugely impt) - not the type you get from a lousy lens but closer to the human eye; feels almost more natural. I'm only just switching to DSLR (I've had 2 "high-end" p&s digitals, currently the S3 IS which is pretty darn nifty), so it may be leftover from film days. Just a personal preference.
Again, great shots!

It's also my impression.. perhaps a non good sharpening workflow?

I'm very courious about the perfect sharpening workflow some user doing here, for example in the football shot we've seen in one of the latest post.
