How to take digital pics of small objects

I need to take a picture of some small unit dose medication packages - approximately 1" wide by 4" to 4" by 4". Is there some kind of small box which a camera could be mounted to for taking pictures say 12" to 15" away? Any suggestions as to cameras? Would a Canon S50 work - another possibility is a G9. I suppose the box would have it's own light source.

that's my DIY take on it. materials are found at hardware or plastics store. some stores even cut to size for you for a small fee. (its 12" squares).

table clamp-on lamps and screw base fluorescents (low heat) bulbs.

add live view and a good macro 'filter' lens and you're in business.

Thanks - I see you are using a black background under the object being photographed. Does that make it easier to pick the image from background in order to have only the object being photographed show up.

I choose a variety of colors, just for fun. pick whichever works for the subject you are shooting.

I got those as 'foamies' at a fabric store (of all places) the texture is nice in that it does not reflect (shine) a lot and it 'slopes' nicely.
