Best Mac Mouse?

Hello,

I'm really sick and tired of my Mighty Mouse. It's really uncomfortable to hold, my fingers slide off the shell when I try to click and drag things, and the scroll ball on the top regularly stops scrolling down.

So, what is the BEST Mouse to use with a Mac? I've tried a Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000, which is a bit better than the Mighty Mouse, but the software side of things is a bit messy and the Control-Zoom trick doesn't work as slickly as with the Mighty Mouse.

I really wish Apple either made a BETTER Mouse, or an external Touch Pad, so I could just use my fingers like I do on a MacBook.

Go to Office Depot as soon as you can and get a Logitech MX Revolution, it's on sale for $79.99 right now instant rebate, regular $100. I got sick of the Mighty Mouse after about 3 days.

The MX Revo is fully supported in OSX, it's amazing, has a clutch in the scroll wheel, you gotta really use it to understand what I mean.

Thanks. The MX Revolution has caught my eye before, but it's wireless/cordless isn't it? So, what kind of stuff do you need on your desk, in addition to the mouse itself?

Why can't they make the MX Revolution bluetooth so it connects directly to the bluetooth inside most Macs? It's a shame.

In fact, all Apple mice are... designed as fashion accessories, not practical usable tools.

What is best for you is subjective though, you'll have to try yourself. I always go with Microsoft or Logitech, most of their models support Macs nicely.

It's amazing how this area evolves, I remember using Micorsoft Mouse in the 90's thinking how ergonomic and advanced it was - well before optical, scroll wheels and wireless!

You don't need anything on your desk. It comes with a very nice ultra tiny 2.4Ghz receiver that I have plugged into the side of my aluminum apple keyboard, it's like 1/2" wide and 1" long.

You can put the mouse charger anywhere. It lasts about 4 days of heavy duty use without a charge, has a lithium ion battery. 45 minute charge, I put it on the charger every other night.

The mouse is GLITCH free, in fact I've tested it up to 30 feet, and it still works good enough to play games with. Signal drops completely at probably 40 feet.

If you look here you can see the little micro receiver on the side of the keyboard.

I use this mouse. Best mouse I've ever used.

There is a small USB dongle for the receiver, which I have plugged into my keyboard.
There's also a recharging station.

I asked this very question previously and the MX revolution got the thumbs up from many here. I agree about the non-bluetooth ability though, but I seem to recall reading about not loading the Logitech software itself due to it's bugginess. Either way, after regular MM gutting for cleaning purposes and many returns (will keep doing this now after warenty expires in 12 months) the MX will be on my hit list. No personal experience though, just the responses I got here and a quick play at the shops.

I have enjoyed my Wacom wireless, 5 button mouse.
No batteries or recharging needed.

Tweekie...

Very nice setup there. Much more clean and orgabized than my own I fear.

I won one of those new aluminum keyboards at a MAC event a few weeks ago and I love using it with my MacPro. I amusing the keyboard via an in-table USB 2.0 hub and I do not think it will run the sender unless it ( the keyboard) is plugged directly into my MacPro.

Nicely done!

I hate cordless mice for a desktop computer. I've used a handful, including one of the nicer Logitech cordless mice (older Revolution maybe) and I just can't stand the endless recharging or swapping of batteries. IMO there's no point to it for a mouse that will always be used on a desktop.

If that sounds like you I would highly recommend the Logitech MX 400:

It's only $40, a laser mouse, includes all the buttons I need and has great ergonomics. You really can't beat it.

...without installing the Logitech software, which I hear is buggy on laptops running 10.4.10? Thanks... chas

Yes, but you won't be able to configure its additional buttons. Left & right-click will work, as well as the scroll wheel. But its forward & back thumb buttons and clicking the scroll wheel will do nothing.

I use the Logitech software and have never had any problems with it (on both PPC & Intel Macs) on 10.4.10.

You can see posts all over the internet about their software. They try to keep it a secret. I know I had a serious problem with their latest software on my MBP and OS 10.4.10. First they tried to assure me that the software would work with my system and computer. When I had big problems they switched me to a different version which was worse.

I downloaded the software to the scrollwheel trackball and it works fine. Out of the box for the Mac OS10.4, it works with default buttons activation of useful functions which can be changed to other functions with the software. Not buggy in my experience. If I had it to do over again, I would have purchased this trackball mouse instead:

It is more to my ergonomical taste but wasn't available at the store I went to at the time.
