Anyone here use this brand of CRT? I have heard a lot of good things about the mitsu diamondpro but can't afford one. The NECs get a lot of talk too. I know about all of the variables in LCDs but what are the main things to look for in a CRT? Are the differences as drastic as with LCDs? Or will anything above the bargain basement models work well?

Thank you in advance!

Sun Micro is not really known for its monitors, but for proprietary server hardware. I would imagine that these monitors are actually manufactuered by another company(matter of a fact, I am almost 100% sure of it). Find out who makes the hardware, and then do some research : )

I've had a few Sun 21" monitors over the years. Most are actually made by Sony and equivalent to any of Sony's high end monitors. I think a few were Mitsubishi Diamonds if I recall. The problem with these is the amount of desk realestate they require not to mention their weight. CRTs don't really stay in perfect working order during their usable lifespan like an LCD either. They tend to yellow and the screen geometry gets warped.

To answer the second part of your question about CRTs varying like LCDs.... I would say it's very similar. You need to consider dot pitch, refresh rate, resolution, brightness, color accuracy, contrast and display controls.

A nice CRT can be fantastic but a cheap on is often a nightmare. All of Sun's 21" flat screens were very high quality made for use in CAD and drafting applications. Some of the smaller Sun's were just so so made to go with desktop workstations and write email. Big differences.

I have that exact monitor - its really Sony glass
has worked well for years - and compared to other LCD
monitors - seems to color accurately -

no doubt this monitor's got some hours on it, and exhibits
the equivalent of parkison's disease; the shaky image thing,
most likely something to do with the power supply

don't remember who the poster was, but there was recently
a pretty decent technical thread about was the 'fast' / low response
time monitors aren't what we photoshopper's want - something to
do wtih bit depths, etc.

one thing's for certainly if you are looking to purchase a monitor
by-the-pound; at 155lbs - you'll have to purchase several large LCDs
to compete with the Sun/Sony boat anchor

that monitor weighs like 75 lbs....its a good one for sure....still not an lcd out there that will touch it for color and shading....

Thank you all very much for your input. I have a huge desk that will hopefully support it. To me it seems like a better idea to get a higher end crt for a $100 than a crappy lcd for $300.00

Shouldn't have to pay anywhere near $300 for a crappy LCD. In fact you should get a pretty darn good one for that amount. And I am almost certain you'd be happier with it than the HUGE Sun 21" CRT.

Check some of the deals offered through this site for example. One Dell system has a nice computer, a Microsoft OS, and 19" widescreen monitor for $379 or so. I have one of those monitors and wouldn't hesitate to recommend one over the Sony/Sun CRT.
