That probably has to do with the fact production of most newer cameras (including my A640) have moved from Japan to China to cut costs. Greater use of lower quality plastics hasn't helped. Image quality on non-DSLR cameras has definitely peaked in recent years (in fact reached a plateau due to the megapixel race IMHO) but the actual build of the cameras has gone down. Fortunately, prices on cameras have dropped considerably as well. I remember paying nearly $600 or so for my Olympus 3040 & about the same for my Canon G2 back in the day. I only paid $250 w/tax and shipping for my 640 about 6 months ago! In fact I ruled out the G7 just because the A640 was such good bang for the buck.
