D3 high ISO samples in digitalreview.ca.

...are downsized high ISO shots that are very obviously done with heavy noise reduction.
Nothing my 5D couldn't achieve.

So,
what'else is new ?

Hi 0.3 --- 8000 ISO --- 3540x2832 JPEG, straight out of the pre-prod. camera (slightly cropped).

Care to show me a similar photo, taken with your 5D ?

I'm seeing a very noisy image with poor dynamic range (catcher's uni....blown whites and no detail in blacks in a low contrast lighting situation)

Not to take anything away from NIkon's bold move to include 6400 as a non-H standard ISO option but how is this better than a 1D Mk 3 at 6400 or even a 5D or 40D at 3200, -1EV, pushed +1?

So this really works.....just to check you understand before I go dumping lots of low light shots at these settings......

the d3 looks like the camera canon should and could have made. in fact many of us expected them to combine the ds and d series into a single, all purpose camera. i had the urge to purchased any of a number of 1dmk3 bodies below list on the miranda forum over the last few weeks and they have been in stock at normans, badger graphics and b&h this last weekend. it looks like the rush for them is over and the d3 migh be part of the reason. it is for me.

At least digitalreview says this is from NC NX so not straight from camera.
No info AFAIK how the pic may have been processed.

But the sample 2 ISO6400 JPEG from camera (NR normal) does not too bad.
Is that revolutionary - I do not know.

And as I have understood the production of the camera has started, I guess we can stop to speak about "preproduction camera" (image 13-Sep-07).

Production is, AKAIK, going on at full capacity.
But firmware isn't set yet, that's why it's still "pre-production".

I honestly hope to be blown away by the high ISO IQ of the D3 and D300. It would bode well for future Canon bodies if Nikon sigificantly improves on the Canon high-iso IQ. It's just that I'm not seeing it yet.

It's not simply a question of how noticeable luminance and color noise are at 3200+ ISOs. It's much more a matter of how much IQ you have to give-up. Dynamic range definitely takes a hit, and in the example you linked I found the catcher's uniform to have neither good shadow nor highlight detail despite being a low contrast part of the frame... the result really is no better than underexposing an ISO 3200 shot and correcting it when you do the raw conversion.

Try it yourself with whatever body you currently own--Canon or Nikon--it won't be pretty but it will be useable for some purposes.

This forum is completely useless.

Are you looking at that image on your mobile phone? Try opening it up in Photoshop and looking at the histogram...
