totally new to dlsr. what's the best (speed wise) media card for a700? and what's the best performance/price? thanks!

Having just picked up an A700 myself I would say nothing smaller than 2 gig and nothing slower than 133x.

I'm using 2 gig SanDisk Extreme IIIs at the moment, I don't have experience with other brands.

Enjoy your camera!

San disk Extereme III or if you are going to be doing lots of 5 FPS shooting..
the Extreme IV is good.

also the new memory stick pro-hg may even be faster.. I am going to keep a good MS in the camera as back-up and buy Extereme III CFs because I don't do a lot of full frames per second shooting.

i took a look at amazon.com and found this one 4GB Extreme Cf Ducati Edition @$128.99. is it compatible to a700? sony's a700 spec only mentioned about cf ii/iii and ms duo/pro duo. thanks!

I have had great results with Transcend cards. I have 2 4GB 120x models I use with my 7D and 2 new 8GB 266x models for my A700. Of course, I have heard few complaints from users of SanDisk, Lexar or other top tier cards.

Several reviews have pointed out the A700 makes great use of speedy cards. The A700 formats my Transcend 8GB cards in several seconds.

If you take only several pictures at a time, as opposed to burst shooting at 5 fps, you can save money with the use of slower cards. As with most technology, you pay for speed. You might consider 1 fast (266x or greater speed) card in 4 or 8 GB and additional slower cards. The only drawback, the camera buffer will not write to the slower card as quickly with a lower speed rated card as to a higher rated card. Most top tier manufactures offer a lifetime warranty with their products.

This link is to Newegg (my preferred vendor for computer related products although I am sure Phil would appreciate you giving Amazon a look) for the Transcend 8GB 266x: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208298

You may also find this chart at dyxum.com (a really great resource for A mount lenses) useful although it doesn't seem up to date: http://www.dyxum.com/reviews/cfcard/index.asp?sortparam=tms

Transcend is really good for the price. You can get them really fast and cheap. I have a 4GB and 8GB transcend with my A100 and they have never failed me and they are fast enough to keep up with the A100 at least. Haven't tested with my A700 yet.

...

I have two 1GB and two 2GB Sandisk Ultra II which work very well ( though not too fast ) and never gave me any trouble ( 7D and A100 ), later I bought a Lexar 4GB 133x and it is a lot faster to wright and also never gave me any problems.

yes, i need to shoot dancing performance on stage, which is one of reasons i ordered a700 for its high iso performance and 5fps.
