Hey Everyone, I just took some photo's of Niagara Falls and area, hope you enjoy and feel free to let me know what i can do better!! thanks!

Rob

a cool one with the "spotlight" of sun on the water above the falls

a pretty rainbow

the old courthouse in Niagara on the Lake (crooked? how do i straighten in photoshop?)

lights on the falls (sorry about the reflection in the window)

Skylon Tower

Minolta Tower

and last but not least, shadows of the buildings on the Horseshoe Falls

They are very nice shots, but I think the first one is a bit under exposed. Other than that, good job, and keep shooting ;-)

thanks for the reply, I agree the first one is underexposed, i had a hard time with it since it was soo bright in that patch of sky! thanks a lot!

I like the first (although underexposed) and the third!

About the straightening:
-Open image in PS

-Press C for crop tool and click 'Front Image' (important since you'll have to crop off black parts from image later, after straightening)
-Press Shift-I 'till you've selected the Ruler Tool

-Use straight line in photo (bottom part of the door for example) and draw line with the Ruler Tool
-Go to: Image --> Rotate Canvas --> Arbitrary and press Enter

-Back to C (Crop Tool) and crop in such a way that black parts are excluded from the image

Hope that helps!

Another option for straightening with this option you will not have to loose as much of the image due to cropping and you will get all lines much more lined up:

Do a "Show Grid" that will put a grid of lines on the image. You can set the spacing to what you want. Try for about 6 or so lines across the image.

Do the arbritrary rotation as suggested above. Using the grid as your metric to get the horizontal lines in the image truly horizontal.

Then, I believe you will have to correct the perspective distortion. "Select all" and then under the "Edit" menu, choose "Transform" and "Perspective". Use corner tabs to warp the image until all lines appear appropriately horizontal or vertical. Just play with it until you get it right. It really isn't that hard and it doesn't have to be perfect it just has to look good. Without the grid noone will notice a small amount of error.

Good luck.

  1. 1 could be brighter and cropping to level the horizon would help. #2 is nice. I wonder why you chose to show the upstream part of the falls rather than more of the chasm. #3 is your black point off? Again it needs to be leveled. #4 was ruined by not turning off the lights. #5 did you eat in the Skylin Restaurant? The food is great and the view magnificent. We were up there for sunset. Any reason you centered the tower? #6 Bulls eye. #7 Busy, long shadows from the wrong time of the day to take the photo.

Thanks for the advice and comments Morris, just a few questions, #3 you asked fi my black point is off...what does that mean? and yes, i need to level it! I was unable to get the gorge in the picture because the hotel room i stayed in faced upstream, I have never eaten in the skylon restaurant, but hear from all the hotel guests its amazing! well I'm at least glad I got one bulls eye! lol...its a start! oh and the reason I centered the tower is because I can't seem to grasp the rule of thirds concept, I really need to take a class so I can post a few pictures and have you give them all a bulls eye! I will keep at it, and thanks again!!!

Number 2 is excellent and would make an excellent one to hang on your wall. Nice series. Dave

The first, second and fifth are keepers.

Very nicely done.

Do you have any from the maid of the mist?

My favorite is the first image. You've captured some interesting lighting and an interesting composition of the falls.

I think the photo would benefit somewhat from some brightening in post processing. Then, it would also be suitable for framing.

thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it! Unfortunately I have not yet ridden the maid of the mist, one day i will, it is only 10 minutes from home! Main reason i haven't is because I am scared, as sad as it is to say!! haha,

I'd be more afraid to ride something that goes over the falls than a ship that's already below the falls. :)
