External Hard Drive

I have two external drives fail me in the past two months. The first one was Maxtor 1TB, the second one was from Seagate, the Freeagent 750G drive. In both cases, they died within two weeks from the date of purchase. I can understand the Maxtor having bad reputation, so I thought I did the right thing by switching to Seagate, but it was no better. Turns out, they are both made by Seagate.

That is disconcerting news, since I recently purchased a Seagate Free Agent Pro 750 G drive. I've had it for a couple of weeks and no problems so far. I guess I'll backup the backup for a while.
Good luck with your next drive.

This is tough news indeed.

One of the reasons I test the dog out of any new components is to uncover potential near term failures like this. I have 9 external hard drives and I run them for weeks without critical data before committing to them. It helps cut down on bad surprises.

I am also concerned about Seagate now that they have absorbed Maxtor. I was hoping that Seagate was just buying them and would abandon their production and particularly their Quality Control system and just remove the brand from the market place.

Have you tried any type of recovery of the failed drives?

Hopefully you can recover something. Good Luck!

This was my favorite at the Classics's at Barber this past Saturday. This 1947 MG TD lost to a 1953 MG TD with ROAD wheels! Geesssss..

I have 7 external hard drives to back up my images. I move projects
to the externals after they are completed. I only plug these drives
in and access these images when I have orders or want images for my
portfolio. I don't think cooling fans are an issue with this type
of use... I haven't had a problem. I do all my work on the computer
HDs as this is much faster.

I recommend only Seagate...you can get 300 GB drive and up for less
than $1 per GB of storage, and it is getting cheaper!

Best, Jack
I agree with Jack. Use them and then unplug them. I also agree to recommend Seagate. I've heard bad things with WD for quite some time now.
