400D flash keeps on popping up in green mode

Although I never use full-auto aka green mode I just wanted to try it out after the ux repair by Canon ..

I must be missing a setting somewhere because the flash keeps on popping up even in broad daylight with full sunshine and at seetings 1/250 F9 ... funny !
anyone an idea how/why ?

yes it fires and it is pretty darn annoying .. .. if I was using green mode that is ..
Is this standard 400D behaviour ?

of course it matters. if you had a camera that didnt function properly you would inquire about it as well. His problem is the difference from wasting much of his battery power on using unneeded flash, to conserving power and being able to shoot alot more in an outing.

To the OP, I dont think it should be popping up in bright daylight, mine only does when there is not enough light in the scene

I have checked and for the first time ever I selected the green square. 1/500 f7.1 ISO 200 (pointing a a light fitting) No Flash pop up. Point in the other direction up it pops. I think you must have bought a Friday camera, with all the luck you have had I am surprised you have not already sold it.

Since the OP never uses green mode I doubt if it will cause him too big a problem. On the other hand the OP bought a dog of a camera and has had it repaired but now it has an idiosyncrasy the might well lead anyone to doubt the quality of the repair and to wonder what next.

You are very well & clearly describing what I've gotten .. now after repair and entirely depending on unknown random parameters dialing in an EV between +1/3 and +2 is yielding exactly the same exposure ie the EC compensation isn't doing anything at all (histograms are absolutely identical go figure ! I'm not believing what I'm seeing).. If it wouldn't conflict with my conscience to sell such a dog to anyone for good money I would have gotten rid of it a long time ago .. guess I'll have to count my losses .. :-(

Worst case: canon repair may suggest to have it re-serviced .. :-( Cam is 5 months old from which it spent 1 month at Canon repair .. sigh ..

In Green Mode, If there is insufficient Light..IT WILL POP UP and charge up for use...Canon has always had this function as far back as the EOS Elan Film Camera, or Further on EOS Film cameras with built in flash...

USE "P" (Program) if you don't want the flash to pop up automatically.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall seeing your name in the Sony/Konica forum. Anyhow, the Canon system works very differently than the sony/minolta system with MANUAL pop-up flash. The only way to suppressed the pop-up is to use the Creative Zone ( P / AV/ TV / M) mode. What I find rather restrictive is that canon also limited the iso from 100-400 in the PIC mode.

Where as Konica Minolta is more flexible, it give you complete access to iso100-3200 regardless which PIC mode you're using. I share my camera with my girlfriend, who really appreciate the portrait mode + iso800, but that is not an option on the canon side's PIC mode. I just have to set it to the AV mode for her. Its not a big deal, but I couldn't understand why canon would restrict iso selection in PIC mode.

I believe it was about the upcoming speculation of the Sony A700 and one other DSLR not yet announced. I have a contact at a local Sony Style store that has received a memo about 2 future DSLR releases this fall/winter...the only details they got, that 2 models would be released...one pro, one Mid level...

yeah I would expect that the flash fires for "fill flash" situations but that would be more exception than rule so rigidly sticking to some page in a manual to explain general camera behaviour is pretty meager .. & BTW in green mode I've only shot landscapes which by default are all "backlit" so your RTFM logic surely holds .. close, but no cigar sorry
