I have a rebel xt right now and I use the dual battery back/grip thing but the battery is still not good enough for my work (mostly expedition/backpacking stuff). How does the 40d compare to the 350d with battery life? Also, does the 40d come with a dual battery grip or do you have to purchase it separately?

thanks.

The battery life on the 40D is around 1100 shots depending on flash, IS and LCD monitor use. The grip is available separately.

You can still use the older 20D/30D grip BG-E2 Only a slight improvement in weather sealing on the newer BG-E2N battery compartment (Note that its mainly dust sealing not water as the buttons are not sealed)

If 40D battery life is anyhing like the 30D then you won't have any problems because they just keep going all day. (Of course it depends on how much you use the LCD, flash, IS lenses etc.

Why not get some higher capacity batteries. With two 1200mAH batteries, I have gone days without charging.

I can confirm without a doubt the BG-E2 works perfectly fine on the 40D body. I just picked an E2 up today at my local shop (they didn't even yet have the BG-E2N). Looks like Canon is phasing in the BG-E2N to replace the BG-E2. My opinion is to get the E2 while you can and save a bit of money.

The differences between the E2N and E2 don't seem to be worth the extra $$$ (using B&H prices... BG-E2 (which they don't seem to sell anymore) is/was 169... but the BG-E2N is 249)...

Here's a review done by Roland Lim showing that they are basically identical save for a bit of weather stripping on the battery door. ( http://rolandlim.wordpress.com/2007/08/30/the-new-bg-e2n-grip-vs-the-old-bg-e2-grip/ )

I'm sure one could either make their own seal - or maybe even order a Canon seal in a few weeks for the E2N and put on their E2.

All I can say is that the E2 works fine on the 40D. I'm glad I picked one up. Makes the whole camera feel more balanced and definitely gives more flexibility and comfort when shooting in portrait orientation. I recommend it to all unless they need to keep things as compact as possible - in which case may as well get the XTi.

cheers
