hi,

i want to get a ultra compact digital camera, for travel and everyday use.

photos will mainly be for websites, emails, and small prints.

basically, i want a good point-and-shoot camera which produce good quality photographs. manual controls would be good but not very important.

any comments are welcomed. especially from owners of ultra compact digital cameras.

thanks for your help!

I just got an Olympus D40Z and am happy with it so far. It is my first digital and the small size was the deciding factor for me. I figured that I would be more apt to have the camera with me more often if I could carry it around easily. I bought a small case (6" tall X 4" wide X 3" deep) that I carry the camera, an extra smart media card, spare batteries, and a mini tripod in. You loose some zoom and low light capability but if the small size is important to you then mabye it is worth it.
Here is a link to some of my first images.

The fuji f601z is the ticket, due out next month. Full motion video with sound, high res pictures, full manual controls, can act as a web camera, and will fit in your pocket. Check it out.

I just bought my very first digicam on Sunday! I am having lots of fun so far with it and can't wait to find some time to just go out and shoot! I purchased the Olympus D-510Z . So far I am very happy with it and the images it takes have been very impressive. It is a nice small size and very comfortable to handle. I read many reviews (from professionals and also owners and users of this camera) and was pleased with what I read. This is a wonderful camera for the beginner. Has a few manual controls but not so many that it confuses the beginner such as I am. I take fantastic indoor photos (one of the main reasons I purchased it!), easy to use. I would highly recommend it! Good luck in your search for your perfect camera!

I want to second the D510 as a good starter camera, and the price has been dropping on it (under $300 in some places). If you are not familar with the camera, it is 1.9 megapixel (1600x1200) camera with a 3x optical zoom lens. One feature that is nice for carrying the camera around is the clamshell design that provides a lenscap when it is closed, and the lens fits in the case. It is roughly the same size and weight as my wife and daughter's point and shoot 35mm cameras.

However, there are smaller cameras you might want to consider if size is of particular concern. When I did my camera shopping, I looked at the Nikon coolpix 775, but rejected it because it was too small for my hands. The Canon Elph might be another camera to look at (though you only get 2x zoom). Finally, the Minolta Dimage X is supposed to be really small (it hadn't been announced when I was looking, so I don't recall how small it is).

thanks for both your help.

i have used my boyfriend's olympus 35mm before and i am quite pleased with its size and quality. i did not know that olympus has this camera actually... and the price sounds a lot more reasonable... than the other cameras i have been considering... i will definitely be considering this one.

luvdigital: do you think you can post up some of your photos? thanks!

once again, thank you for your help!

the photos you have taken are really nice!

really tempted by your photos to get the olympus D40z, however, the price would be a problem... hmmmm

For what its worth, you can look at most of the pictures I and my wife have taken since I bought the camera in December:

http://www.cygnus.com/~meissner/photo.html

Most of these were shot with the average (HQ) mode as opposed to the best mode (SHQ), and most of them needed no processing other than potentially cropping or rotation (a few were lighted or had the gamma modified). I saw it in Staples today for $299, so I imagine if you shop around, you can get it even cheaper. In addition to the camera, you probably want a recharger and Nimh AA batteries (I use the Ray-o-vac 1 hour charger + 4 Ray-o-vac 1600 maH batteries, which I got at Walmart, and rated pretty high in the tests), and a larger memory card (the camera comes with an 8 megabyte card). If you think you are going to be taking lots of pictures, you might want to get additional batteries and more smartmedia cards (HQ is 400K-500K per picture, and SHQ is usually around 1M - 1.3M).

Hi Violet. Here are a few photos I have taken with my Olympus D-510Z. Please remember that I am brand new to photography and so I really don't know what I am doing! Just in the very early learning stage! However, you are welcome to view my sad attempt at taking photos! LOL!!
