I didn't say you need tons of equipment but you do need to know how much someone wants to spend. If you only have a little bit of money and you shoot Nikon then I think some speedlights two stands and some umbrellas are the best way to go. If you are looking at needing more power then monolights are the next best choice but the cost goes up dramatically. Then you can really go up from there. So it all depends. Did you ask what lights the guy was using. It could of been two Broncolor with dedicated pack at about 8 grand for just those two lights. I highly doubt a victoria secret photog was shooting with alien bees (which I have by the way). The reason the better lights cost so much depend on recycle time, temperature consistantsy through all stops, power to blow through a softbox and still light against all that natural light, how many shots you can get off the battery pack on location, ect ect. Ansel Adams seemed to do just fine with one big free light, so it all depends on what you are trying to shoot, what effect you are trying to achieve and unfortunatly what your budget is.
